Broadway In Chicago Announces 2017-18 Season
The windy city, which receives its annual dose of Broadway each season through Broadway In Chicago, has announced it’s 2017-18 lineup.
From Chicago premieres to returns from musical theater classics, the 2017-18 season for Broadway In Chicago is set to dazzle with new hits direct from Broadway audiences across the country are dying to see. Broadway In Chicago takes place across several venues including the Cadillac Palace Theatre, Oriental Theater, Privatebank Theater, Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University and Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place. Chicago, arguably the largest theatre mecca in the United States outside New York, has an appetite for new Broadway hits and pre-engagements. While the season has mostly been secured, I have no doubt several last-minute additions will make themselves known to us especially looking to the spring 2018 timeframe. The full 2017-18 season is set to include;
- Motown The Musical (September 25 through October 8th)
- Les Miserables (October 11th through October 29th)
- School Of Rock (November 1st through November 19th)
- White Christmas (November 21st through December 3rd)
- Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (December 5th through January 28th)
- The Humans (January 30th through February 11th)
- Love Never Dies (February 14th through March 4th)
Outside the Cadillac Palace, the 2017-18 season is set to include the return of a Broadway staple and also a pre-Broadway tryout. At the Oriental Theater, Jimmy Buffet’s Escape To Margaritaville will play a pre-Broadway engagement for a limited time beginning November 9th, 2017. In December, Wicked returns to the Oriental to play performances December 6th through January 21st, 2018. Wicked returns to the Oriental after having played that Chicago venue from 2005-2009. Chicago’s Privatebank is currently home to an open-ended run of Hamilton, which launched following the success of its New York bow.
LUNER LOWDOWN: Chicago is one of my favorite theater cities in the entire United States! This midwest mecca has emerged in the past decade to not only be a top spot for out-of-town tours to play but thee place to try-out your show before heading to Broadway. Countless productions in recent years, that have gone on to have much success in New York, began their runs in Chicago and won over audiences there first. Chicago audiences have welcomed the pre-Broadway tryout culture and consistently now look forward to seeing many shows in the world premieres before New York audiences. I think this new season not only continues to show how important of a theater city Chicago is for touring productions but pre-Broadway engagements and returning blockbusters.
