12771536_1142299482471531_3841400885644726981_oYou can’t have musical theatre without dancing. It’s as simple as that. That being said, it only seems fitting to have a set of awards solely to honor Broadway and off-Broadway’s best dancing each season! From sailors to shuffling along to sign language, this season’s choreography broke boundaries with new movement, styles and classic re-creations on and off Broadway. Now, it’s time to celebrate those who stood out among a season of dancers. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the full list of 2016 Astaire Award nominations!

The Fred & Adele Astaire Awards are awards that recognize outstanding achievement in dance on Broadway each season. First established in 1982, the awards were created with the cooperation of Fred Astaire not only to honor him but also his sister, Adele. Together, the two starred in ten Broadway musicals together between 1917 and 1931. The awards are presented by producer Patricia Watt and The Douglas Watt Family Fund for the Performing Arts.

Dames-at-Sea-2Luner Lowdown: Congratulations to all of the 2016 Astaire Award nominees! This is an incredible list of performers who have truly showed off their dancing and movement chops this season on and off Broadway! The ensemble Astaire Award may be one of my favorite awards presented each season! It is one of my favorites as ensembles are the backbone of Broadway musicals and far too often not recognized as a whole. I’m thrilled to see so many large casts nominated this year in a season where incredible work is being done in the cast in many heavy dance and movement based productions. The individual recognition of the Astaire Awards is also special for performers who are truly getting a chance to shine in dance heavy roles this season on Broadway. Thanks to Jeremy Daniel for the photo right!
