Paper Mill Playhouse (Pictured Right) is located in Millburn, New Jersey built from a building that has stood on the grounds since 1795. Originally a Paper Mill, the building stood abandoned for many decades before being turned into a working theatre in the late 1920’s/early 1930’s. The building has since been renovated and remodeled multiple times following fires throughout its years. Paper Mill officially began staging shows in 1934 and has remained a New Jersey theatre icon since then. The theatre found itself in serious financial trouble in 2007 seeking $1.5 million dollars to continue operations or faced closing. While Paper Mill failed to raise the funds needed to remain open, the township of Millburn purchased the land on which the theater sits and have entered a 75 years lease with the theatre in order to secure its future. Despite the local government intervention, all operations remain independently run through the playhouse.
Luner Lowdown: I am so looking forward to Paper Mill staging West Side Story as their season finale later this year! Paper Mill has lined up an incredible cast of veterans and several familiar faces not only to the Broadway community but ourselves. I’m thrilled and looking forward to seeing fellow-classmate and Wagner Theatre alum Michael Bullard (Pictured Right) back on stage in the production having starred in the International Tour just 3 years ago! Paper Mill brings West Side Story back to the region after the show was most recently revived on Broadway in 2009. That new production incorporated Spanish lyrics and dialogue into the English libretto with the help of Tony Award winner Lin-Manual Miranda. I have no doubt Paper Mill will see large audiences for this show’s entire run as West Side Story has proved to be a timeless musical for the world of theatre-goers.
