Hughie Will End Broadway Limited Engagement Early

Hughie_200While not every show last forever, Broadway got an unexpected closing announcement this week sending a production into final double-digit performances this month. The news does come as a surprise though following the production’s return to Broadway with a Tony Award winning creative team and award-winning cast including a Hollywood Broadway debut. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the sad news that Hughie will shutter on Broadway earlier than expected!

111669Producers of Hughie on Broadway have announced the show will end its limited engagement later this month playing its final performance March 27th, 2016 at The Booth Theatre. The show, originally scheduled through June 2016, will end it’s run after only 55 performances and nearly 10 weeks early. Producers cited “limited advance ticket sales” as the reason for the show closing following mostly positive reviews just one week ago when the show officially opened. The show marks the Broadway debut for Academy and Golden Globe Award winner Forest Whitaker (Pictured Above Right) as Erie performing alongside Tony Award winner Frank Wood as Charlie.

IMG_1355Hughie began previews on Broadway February 8th before officially opening last week, February 25th. Tony Award winner Michael Grandage directs the production reuniting his Tony Award winning team from Red which includes Christopher Oram as scenic and costume designer, Tony Award winner Neil Austinas lighting designer and Tony Award winner Adam Cork as sound designer.

Hughie, written in 1942 by Eugene O’Neill, was never staged officially until 1958. The show made its first bow on Broadway in 1964 with Jason Robards starring as Erie. Robards went on to win the Tony Award for his performance in the show’s debut. It has been revived on Broadway twice, once in 1975 and once again in 1996 starring Al Pacino.
