2016 Olivier Award Nominations Announced


As Broadway’s spring season just gets underway and prepares to fully hit the stage in the coming weeks, London is coming to the end of another year!  London’s West End has just presented a spectacular season filled with diverse productions, remarkable revivals and more from both Britain and Broadway. So who stood out the most in a season of hits? Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that the 2016 Olivier Award nominations have been announced!

This morning, Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton took the stage at Rosewood London (Pictured Right) to kick off the 2016 London theatre season awards. Announcing nominations for The Olivier Awards, the highest honor for theatre in the United Kingdom, the two prepared to usher the awards into their 40th year now in London, which began in 1976. The awards, renamed for Lord Olivier in 1984, are presented through The Society Of London Theatre and cover more than just musicals and plays. Dance, opera and most staged productions in London’s West End are eligible for awards. They offer a wider range of awards compared to The Tony Awards with several awards also named after corporate sponsors.

Congratulations to all of those nominated for a 2016 Olivier Award! A very exciting time for London and it’s West End theatre scene in what has shown to be a diverse year for the stage there. Two big American musicals, Gypsy and Kinky Boots (Pictured Right), topped the list for musicals this season appearing in various categories with Gypsy scoring eight nominations and Kinky Boots seven including Best New Musical. Another American musical, In The Heights, created by Lin-Manual Miranda currently known for his Broadway blockbuster Hamilton managed to top the list even scoring a Best New Musical nomination. The British-born hit Bend It Like Beckham musical, which recently ended it’s west End run, rounded out the Best New Musical category among other nominations. Shakespeare’s Globe received 10 nominations all together between its productions Farinelli And The King and Nell Gwynn. Imelda Staunton, who has already won three Olivier Awards, scored her 11th nomination for playing Mama Rose in Gypsy this past season.
