aapaper-mill-playhouse1Paper Mill Playhouse is one of the nation’s best known regional theaters. However, since it’s near death almost a decade ago, the theater has not only emerged with better financial standings but emerged to become one of the most iconic regional theaters in the country. Located in Millburn, New Jersey not far from New York City and Broadway, the theater has become a launching pad over the course of the last decade serving as the home for not only national tours launching themselves across the country but many shows eyeing and aiming for a Broadway bow. This season alone, The Bandstand which kicked off Paper Mill’s 2015-16 season is slated to transfer to Broadway next year while currently, A Bronx Tale can be found onstage not only in its world premiere staging but eyeing a New York run as well. With this year almost in the books, Paper Mill is looking ahead to their next season on stage! Next year at Paper Mill Playhouse, audiences can expect to see;

  • The Producers (September 28th – October 23rd)
  • The Bodyguard (November 25th – January 1st)
  • A Comedy Of Tenors (February 1st – February 26th)
  • Million Dollar Quartet (March 29th – April 23)
  • Disney’s Mary Poppins (May 24th – June 25th)

A blockbuster season for Paper Mill Playhouse with some fun in store as well! The season kicks off with Broadway’s Tony Award winning The Producers which won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards in 2001. Susan Stroman is set to return recreating her original direction and choreography for this mega-musical! The U.S. premiere of The Bodyguard will play Paper Mill starring Grammy Award winner Deborah Cox before launching into a national tour. At last, Disney returns to Paper Mill with its high-flying hit Mary Poppins sure to win over audiences as Disney has done before at the venue with The Little Mermaid, Newsies and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.

Paper_Mill_Playhouse_entrancePaper Mill Playhouse (Pictured Left) is located in Millburn, New Jersey built from a building that has stood on the grounds since 1795. Originally a Paper Mill, the building stood abandoned for many decades before being turned into a working theatre in the late 1920’s/early 1930’s. The building has since been renovated and remodeled multiple times following fires throughout its years. Paper Mill officially began staging shows in 1934 and has remained a New Jersey theatre icon since then. The theatre found itself in serious financial trouble in 2007 seeking $1.5 million dollars to continue operations or faced closing.  While Paper Mill failed to raise the funds needed to remain open, the township of Millburn purchased the land on which the theater sits and have entered a 75 years lease with the theatre in order to secure its future. Despite the local government intervention, all operations remain independently run through the playhouse.

Paper Mill’s producing artist director, Mark S. Hoebee, expressed his excitement for what looks to be another blockbuster season in New Jersey saying;

“Paper Mill Playhouse continues its legacy of bringing the finest musical theater to the audiences of New Jersey and beyond. We are excited to launch the US premiere musical and national tour of The Bodyguard right here in Millburn. Each time Paper Mill Playhouse has produced a show that has a life beyond our theater, it brings great pride to the people of our state. Paper Mill Playhouse is a leading exporter of art in New Jersey, and we are ecstatic to continue that tradition.”

newsies_02Luner Lowdown: Paper Mill Playhouse has managed to keep the anticipation building! Following another standout season this year with The Bandstand transferring to Broadway, the world premiere of A Bronx Tale (Pictured Bottom) seeking to bow on Broadway and the return of the iconic musical West Side Story, one could doubt this theater can ever top itself. However, in a new season filled with two-mega musicals, The Producers and Mary Poppins, a U.S. premiere as well as some classics, Paper Mill is looking to keep its audiences not only entertained but coming back time and time again. It’s next season looks just as exciting as its past seasons have as new works emerge and old works return new for the stage. Personally, I cannot wait to see The Producers, arguably one of the greatest and funniest musicals ever written, as well as Disney’s Mary Poppins, a personal favorite of mine. I’m looking forward to seeing what this new Disney and Paper Mill partnering leads up to. The venue has worked extensively with Disney following reworking The Little Mermaid, presenting the U.S. premiere of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and hosting Newsies (Pictured Above Right) before it’s Broadway bow.
