Amber Riley Will Lead London Dreamgirls Premiere
And I am telling you…you have to wait no longer! While musicals often are imported from London to Broadway and vice versa, there are special cases. Often, though it does happen, only Broadway or London finds itself as home to a hit musical. This leaves audiences on the other side of the world not only without a musical but the chance to ever experience that show. Sometimes it take months, sometimes it takes years for a show to finally premiere. This time, it took decades. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Glee’s Amber Riley will lead the London premiere of Dreamgirls in Fall 2016!
Sonia Friedman Productions announced today it would welcome the London West End premiere of Dreamgirls in Fall 2016! Performances will begin in November 2016 at The Savoy Theatre (Pictured Right). The production will star Amber Riley, best known for her role as Mercedes in the hit FOX television series Glee, in the leading role of Effie White. The production will be directed and choreographed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Casey Nicholaw. Nicholaw is currently represented in the West End with The Book of Mormon and the upcoming transfer of Disney’s Aladdin.
Amber Riley (Pictured Left) is an American actress and singer best known for her reoccurring role in FOX’s hit television series Glee, which she appeared in from 2009 to 2015. On Glee, she played the role of Mercedes Jones and was featured performing song such as “I Will Always Love You”, “Respect”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “I Look To You”. Riley also performed arguably Dreamgirls most iconic anthem, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” on the show as well. Riley was recently featured on the 17th season of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars television series winning the competition alongside five-time champion Derek Hough. Most recently, Amber’s talents were featured on NBC’s television special The Wiz Live!, as she played the role of Addaperle The Good Witch Of The North.
Dreamgirls is a musical that features music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. The musical follows the story of a young female singing group who aspires to rise up and become superstars of the music industry in Chicago, Illinois. Calling themselves “The Dreams”, the show is based on the success and aspiration of The Supremes and The Shirelles among other artists. Dreamgirls premiered on Broadway in December 1981 at The Imperial Theatre running there through August 1985 playing 1,521 performances. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards including Best Musical and went on to win six of them. It was directed and choreographed by the legendary Michael Bennet. Dreamgirls turned into a major motion film in 2006 by DreamWorks and Paramount in 2006 and starred Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy to mention just a few of the Hollywood names attached.
Luner Lowdown: WOW! What a stellar announcement for London’s West End! At long last, London will have its Dreamgirls premiere almost three decades after Broadway first brought up the curtain on this fabulous show. The choice to bring Amber Riley to London to lead this production is a stellar choice and incredibly exciting. Riley has proved she can bring down the house with the best song in the show, “And I Am Telling You…”, and will now have the opportunity to do so live on stage for audiences in London! One can only hope the potential for a transfer to Broadway is being considered if London proves successful for this show. There has never been a Broadway revival of Dreamgirls and it would seem fitting to bring one, not only with such a well-known name for 2016, but also with a new vision of this show helmed by such a fantastic leader and artist (Casey Nicholaw). I wish I could make it across the pond to see this wonderful new version of a fantastic show!
