James Corden Will Host The 2016 Tony Awards
With Broadway’s biggest night quickly approaching, many have wondered who would hold the honor of hosting this year’s ceremony! With previous hosts such as Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris bringing out the very best of Broadway for the night, The Tony Award’s host has found itself living up to major expectations in recent years. Following last year’s co-hosting by Tony Award winners Alan Cummings and Kristin Chenoweth, the ceremony will return with one (epic) host this year. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the incredibly exciting news that James Corden will host The 2016 Tony Awards!
CBS broke the news this morning that Tony Award winner James Corden will serve as host for The 2016 Tony Awards! The Tony Awards are scheduled to take place June 12th, 2016 from 8-11 PM at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. Corden is no stranger to Broadway having made his debut in 2007 in The History Boys at The Broadhurst Theatre and most recently in One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012 at The Music Box. Both productions came to Broadway following a transfer from London. Corden won the 2012 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors. He also helmed the Disney’s film version of Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods starring as The Baker in 2014.
James Corden is a English actor, writer, producer, comedian, and television host. He is currently the host of The Late Late Show With James Corden on CBS. While Corden is known to many through his film and television appearances, he began in the theatre. In London, he has performed in Martin Guerre, The History Boys, A Respectable Wedding and One Man, Two Guvnors all in London’s West End. His performance in One Man, Two Guvnors won him a Whats On Stage Award for Best Actor in a Play as well as a Olivier nomination. Corden co-created, co-wrote and starred in Gavin & Stacey, a BBC sitcom, from 2007 to 2010. He won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Performance. His gig hosting The Tony Awards will not be his first time out. He has hosted The BRIT Awards, Britain’s largest music awards ceremony, for four years. As host of The Late Late Show With James Corden, his show has often featured theatrical subjects and topics as well as played out theatrical sequences. One of the best is Cross Walk The Musical where him and members of his team perform musicals in the cross walk of a major intersection just outside his studio in California. He has tackled Grease (Click Grease to Watch) before it went LIVE and even The Phantom Of The Opera (Click again!)! He has also created the infamous Carpool Karaoke Series with Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Adele which has received over 500 million views.
In a joint statement, Charlotte St. Martin (President of The Broadway League) and Heather Hitchens (President of the American Theatre Wing) (Both Pictured Left) expressed their excitement for Corden to return to The Tony Awards in a new role saying;
“James is one of those rare performers whose gifts translate perfectly to both the Broadway stage and the television screen, making him the ideal choice to host the Tony Awards. The last time he was at the Tonys, he went home with one. We think he’ll have even more fun as a host. This is going to be one unforgettable show.”
Luner Lowdown: There could not possibly be a better choice for a host for The 2016 Tony Awards! With Neil Patrick Harris bringing The Tony Awards hosting job into the national spotlight in recent years, the position has grown to epic proportions as Broadway expects only the best for its biggest and best night. Following last year’s co-hosting, the event will return to a singular host this year allowing Corden to shine in the role. I can only imagine what he will pull out not only during the actual ceremony, but leading up to the big night as well. Perhaps some Carpool Karoke with well-known Broadway performers? Or maybe some appearances by one of the many Hollywood names appearing on The Great White Way this season? Only time will tell and we cannot wait!
