While the Broadway scene this season is hotter than ever, Off-Broadway will also welcome a slew of new productions as well as one highly anticipated show that made it’s world premiere in 2015! The young writing team Pasek and Paul is back in New York City and ready to take the stage by storm this spring with their new musical based on a true life event. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news of the full casting for the New York premiere of Dear Evan Hansen Off-Broadway!
Second Stage has announced complete casting for the Off Broadway run and New York premiere of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul‘s (Pictured Right) new musical. The musical is set to play at Second Stage’s Tony Kiser Theatre beginning performances March 26th before an official opening May 1st, 2016. The musical premiered this past summer at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. where it began performances July 10th before officially opening July 30th, 2015. It ran as a limited engagement through August 23rd.
Returning to lead the New York premiere will be Ben Platt, best known for his performance in Pitch Perfect, in the title role of Evan. Returning as well from the D.C. productions are Laura Dreyfuss as Zoe, Mike Faist as Connor, Rachel Bay Jones as Heidi, Will Roland as Jared and Jennifer Laura Thompson as Cynthia. New to the New York cast are John Dossett as Larry and Kristolyn Lloyd as Alana completing the cast. Becca Ayers, Gerard Canonico, Asa Somers and Remy Zaken are all understudies for the production.
Three-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif helms the production as director with Danny Mefford as choreographer. Ben Cohn is musical director while Alex Lacamoire is musical supervisor. The rest of the creative team includes David Korins as scenic designer, Emily Rebholz as costume designer, Japhy Weideman as lighting designer and Nevin Steinberg as sound designer. Peter Nigrini provides a projection design for the production.
Dear Evan Hansen is a musical that features music and lyrics by Tony Award nominees Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Steven Levenson and is based on a true life death that occurred at Pasek’s high school more than a decade ago. The production note states that; All his life, Evan Hansen has felt invisible. However, that all changed when Evan writers a letter leading to an incident that starts a lie that will ignite a movement inspiring his community. Evan’s status will change as he is no longer invisible to his friends, his family and the girl he loves but the one person everyone wants to know. How long will Evan be able to keep his secret? And better yet, what will the price be?
Luner Lowdown: I am so incredibly excited for the New York premiere of Dear Evan Hansen! This is one of the most exciting new musicals of 2016. Following it’s acclaimed run in Washington D.C. this past summer, the new musical is set to take New York by storm featuring a score by Tony Award nominees Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for their work Off-Broadway on Dogfight and on Broadway for A Christmas Story. The young writing team has penned incredible music for their previous stage productions and I can’t wait to see what this what holds in store. I’m also excited for this new musical as it is definitely a contemporary story. The production holds contemporary elements to it as well as you can see in the photos, taken by Margot Schulman, from the D.C. run of the show. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this show Off-Broadway this season. No life beyond the Off-Broadway run is speculated or even talked about yet, but of course there is always potential depending on how the run goes. Just a thought of mine and no confirmation from the production. It doesn’t hurt that Second Stage just managed to snag their first house on Broadway to move acclaimed and new productions to a larger stage and audience.
