Not only is a Broadway born production headed to the West End but so is Broadway star about to make her debut in London. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Audra McDonald will make her West End debut as Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill heads to London’s West End!

Wyndham's_Theatre_London_2011_1London will welcome six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald as she makes her West End debut recreating her latest Tony Award performance direct from Broadway in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.  Lady Day will take up residence at Wyndham’s Theatre (Pictured Right) for a strictly limited engagement beginning performances June 25th, officially opening July 5th and running through September 3rd, 2016. McDonald is currently in rehearsals slated to headline the Broadway premiere of Shuffle Along, Or The Making Of The Musical Sensation Of 1921 And All That Followed beginning this spring. A three-month hiatus was previously announced for McDonald noting she will not be in the production from June 21st through September 25th. She plans to return to Shuffle Along on September 27th, 2016.

AUDR_2Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill was first seen on Broadway in spring 2014 at the Circle In The Square Theatre where the production ran as a limited engagement. The show opened April 13th, 2014, ran for 173 performances, 20 previews and nabbed McDonald (Pictured Left) her historic sixth Tony Award win. Written by Lanie Robertson and directed by Lonny Price, the show recounts Billie Holiday’s short and turbulent life. The show features some of the best known tunes that made her famous including “God Bless the Child,” “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “Strange Fruit” and “Taint Nobody’s Biz-ness”.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, McDonald expressed her excitement to at long last make her London debut saying;

“Luckily I’ve kept busy on this side of the pond. But London is my second favourite city in the world, and I’ve always wanted to perform in the West End. I’m just so tickled that it’s finally coming together; and I’m especially thrilled that it’s this particular project.”

13954-5Luner Lowdown: When you think about Audra McDonald and all of the success she has had here on Broadway, you forget the little things in life. For example, the six-time Tony Award winning Broadway star has never performed a show in London’s West End. Sure, Audra has appeared in London many times in concert including just yesterday with two performances across the pond. However, the star will finally have a chance to bring home a performance to London in a full-scale production. With its success here in Broadway, I am incredibly excited for London to experience Lady Day for themselves. This production was critically acclaimed here in New York and I believe will score with UK audiences the way it did here on Broadway. Audra’s will definitely be missed during her brief hiatus from Shuffle Along over the summer months. While the star missing will definitely lead some ticket buyers to wait until her return in the fall, the choice for the hiatus over the summer is smart as New York City fills up with tourists biting to see just about any production they can get their hands on. Shuffle Along will endure but she will most definitely be missed. A replacement or name-star during her hiatus has not been announced at this time.
