Hamilton Digital Lottery Crashes; Live Lottery Returns Today
“Breaking the Internet” is so 2015. However, Broadway’s Hamilton might have brought back the term that surfaced in 2015 and set a new standard at the same time. Luner on Theatre brought you the news that Hamilton’s lottery would go digital effective immediately. However now we’re bringing you the news that that’s all changed. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the news that Hamilton’s lottery will return to a live drawing today following yesterday’s launch of the digital lottery which crashed just minutes after going live!
What happens when the most talked about Broadway show of the season moves it’s lottery, which live draws hundreds if not over a thousand people, to an online server for the Winter? This:
It seemed just about anyone trying to enter the Hamilton lottery yesterday became familiar with this imagine within minutes of entering. While many eventually got through after minutes, half hours or even hours, we would only later find out the official number of those entering the Hamilton lottery on it’s very first day going digital.
At 4 PM EST when winners for the January 5th Hamilton lottery was expected to be announced, the production confirmed that over 50,000 people had entered to win tickets to the show since the lotto opened earlier that day at 9:30 AM. The show went on to say that no lottery tickets would be awarded for that day due to the overwhelming demand and the tickets would go unsold “in an effort to be fair to everyone”. We would later learn, via Miranda’s Twitter feed, the Broadway Direct Lottery System actually award Hamilton tickets to more winners than seats existed for. This led to the decision to have all tickets go unsold and unused. The show went on to make a surprising announcement;
Until an online digital system capable of holding the demand the show is current expecting for a digital lottery, the LIVE lottery drawing would return to the Richard Rodgers Theatre effective TODAY. You read that correctly, the live lottery which Hamilton cancelled just 24 hours prior due to safety concerns returns today to the Richard Rodgers on 46th Street. Miranda announced a live Ham4Ham show would play out at 5:55 PM before the winners for the evening show were drawn.
New York Hamilton fans weren’t the only one feeling frustration yesterday. Tickets for group sales to the upcoming Chicago production of Hamilton went on sale yesterday and crashed phone lines in the Windy City.
Luner on Theatre will keep you updated on the Hamilton Lottery as it returns outside until IT can officially figure out a way to handle the demand for Hamilton lottery tickets in a digital format.
