The musical features beloved hits such as “Kansas City,” “Searchin’,” “On Broadway,” “I’m A Woman,” “Poison Ivy,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Hound Dog”. The revue debuted on Broadway in the spring of 1995 at the Virginia Theatre (Now August Wilson & Pictured Left) and went on to play 2,036 performances running through January 2000. Luner Lowdown: The announcement of a Smokey Joe’s Cafe revival headed to Broadway in 2016 was definitely a surprise to us! But one we greeted with much excitement! Being a fan of the Leiver and Stoller library, Smokey Joe’s Cafe is truly one of our favorite revue shows that exists in the musical theatre world! With 15 years behind it since the original production closed, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this production compares in our world today. Ranging from iPhones to iPods to even record players making a comeback, this Smokey Joe’s revival could make itself very modern while still paying tribute to this classic library of tunes. It is always interesting to see how a revival will reinvent itself and it’s story for future generations. We’re looking forward to it and these classic beloved songs back on Broadway! Fun Fact; Beautiful; The Carole King Musical also features a Lieber & Stoller song! Do you know which one it is?
