Smokey Joe’s Cafe Will Return To Broadway
Broadway is welcoming back an old friend to the neighborhood in 2016. The longest running revue show for The Great White Way has announced it plans to return this upcoming year more than a decade after it closed. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Smokey Joe’s Cafe will return to Broadway in 2016!
According to an Actor’s Equity casting notice, the Tony Award nominated revue Smokey Joe’s Cafe will return to Broadway in 2016. According to the notice, rehearsals for the production will begin May 31st, 2016 with previews slated to begin July 19th. The show will officially open August 18th. Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks is slated to direct the production with Warren Carlyle as choreographer. Sonny Paladino will serve as musical director. Frankel Green Theatrical Management will general manage with casting by Tara Rubin Casting. Producers Richard Frankel, Steve Baruch, Tom Viertel and Marc Routh who ushered the show to Broadway in 1995 are producing the revival.
Smokey Joe’s Cafe is a musical revue featuring the songs of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The musical features beloved hits such as “Kansas City,” “Searchin’,” “On Broadway,” “I’m A Woman,” “Poison Ivy,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Hound Dog”. The revue debuted on Broadway in the spring of 1995 at the Virginia Theatre (Now August Wilson & Pictured Left) and went on to play 2,036 performances running through January 2000. It is the longest running revue show in Broadway history.
At this time, very little is known about the Broadway revival aside from the details listed above. A Broadway home for the production has yet to be announced and will more than likely be determined once any shows from the current season decide to end their runs. The show became a platform for many well-known performers during its initial run such as Gladys Knight, Lesley Gore, Gloria Gaynor and Tony Orlando. It has yet to be determined if the revival will feature headliner guest stars such as those mentioned above.
Luner Lowdown: The announcement of a Smokey Joe’s Cafe revival headed to Broadway in 2016 was definitely a surprise to us! But one we greeted with much excitement! Being a fan of the Leiver and Stoller library, Smokey Joe’s Cafe is truly one of our favorite revue shows that exists in the musical theatre world! With 15 years behind it since the original production closed, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this production compares in our world today. Ranging from iPhones to iPods to even record players making a comeback, this Smokey Joe’s revival could make itself very modern while still paying tribute to this classic library of tunes. It is always interesting to see how a revival will reinvent itself and it’s story for future generations. We’re looking forward to it and these classic beloved songs back on Broadway! Fun Fact; Beautiful; The Carole King Musical also features a Lieber & Stoller song! Do you know which one it is?
