Misery Opens on Broadway
Another new play of the 2015-16 Broadway season officially opens tonight! The show comes to Broadway with a large following previously starting its life as a novel, by an incredibly well-known author, before turning into a movie. As if that wasn’t enough, one of the largest names in Hollywood has come to New York to make his Broadway debut this season in the new show. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Misery officially opens on Broadway!
Misery is a new play written by William Goldman that tells the story of successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon. Sheldon awakes to find himself in the home of his “Number One Fan” after she rescued him from a car crash. As Paul recovers, Annie reads the manuscript to his latest novel to be published and discovers he has killed off her favorite character. Livid, Annie forces Sheldon to pen a second new book making up for his mistakes. As time passes, Paul realizes his fan has no intention of letting him go. He must write his way out of his best story yet because this time, his life depends on it. Goldman penned the book for the Misery film in 1990 and returns to Broadway for the first time since 1962 when he wrote A Family Affair.
Misery officially opens tonight on Broadway at The Broadhurst Theatre after beginning previews earlier this fall on October 22nd, 2015. The show is running as a limited engagementt playing Broadway through February 14th, 2016 only. The play is based on of a 1987 psychological horror novel of the same name written by Stephen King. The novel was later turned into a film in 1990 and actually made it to the stage as well once before it’s Broadway debut. Misery, another stage version of the show, played Off-Broadway. This version of the show went on to be produced in London, Athens and even Dubai. This production comes to Broadway following its world premiere at the Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania in 2012.
Emmy Award winners Bruce Willis (Pictured Left) and Laurie Metcalf led the show to in its Broadway debut alongside Leon Addison Brown. The production marks Bruce Willis’ Broadway debut. The show is directed by Will Frears. The rest of the creative team includes David Korins as scenic designer, David Weiner as lighting designer and Tony Award winner Darron West as sound designer. The production is cast by Telsey + Company/William Cantler, CSA. Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Castle Rock Entertainment and Raymond Wu are producers for the Broadway bow.
