Disaster! Musical Will Come To Broadway This Spring
If you thought this season couldn’t see any more productions, yet alone new musicals at that, think again! An often forgotten Broadway theatre that falls below the iconic 42nd street, has just booked a tenant for the spring following it being home to Amazing Grace up until just a few weeks ago! While the title might sound like the idea for a show in a season packed with Hamilton, School of Rock and current hits like Fun Home, Something Rotten! and more, take a second look. This show looks to be exactly opposite its title. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news hat Disaster! will officially come to Broadway this spring!
Disaster! is a musical that features a book by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick with a songbook of 1970’s music. The musical tells the story of a cast that can’t be stopped from dancing and singing on New York’s first floating casino as wildlife, earthquakes, tidal waves and more threaten the theatre!
Disaster! will come to The Nederlander Theatre this spring beginning previews February 9th, 2016 with an official opening March 8th. Disaster! comes to Broadway following two Off-Broadway productions. The show premiered at the Triad Theatre, now renamed Stage 72, running from January 2012 to March 2012. The show returned to New York playing St. Luke’s Theatre, with a larger designer, in 2013 playing for six months. The show received positive reviews from critics during both it’s Off-Broadway runs. A photo from a previous Off-Broadway run is pictured right.
The cast of Disaster! is filled with some of the best known names in the Broadway community and this is not even the full cast yet! Leading the show during it’s Broadway bow will be Tony Award winner Roger Bart (Pictured Left), Tony Award nominee Kerry Butler, Tony Award nominee Kevin Chamberlin, Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal, Tony Award winner Faith Prince, Drama Desk winner Rachel York, Drama Desk nominee Jennifer Simard, Max Crumm, Lacretta Nicole and Seth Rudetsky himself. Additional casting is expected to be announced soon!
Jack Plotnick will lead Disaster! to Broadway serving as director for the production with JoAnn M. Hunter as choreographer. The rest of the creative team includes Tony Award nominee Tobin Ost as scenic designer, six-time Tony Award winner William Ivey Long as costume designer and Tony Award winner Jeff Croiter as lighting designer. Producers for the Broadway bow include Robert Ahrens, Mickey Liddell/LD Entertainment, Hunter Arnold, James Wesley and Jim Burba & Bob Hayes in association with Katherine McGregor, Mary J. Davis and Stephen CuUnjieng. Additional design team members will be announced soon as well!
Diaster!‘s run on Broadway is already looking to be more than just a fun time. While many could easily disregard this musical for it’s fun nature in a season filled with groundbreaking work and diversity, Disaster! comes back swinging. The show has announced an out-of-this-world cast and design team to bring the production to its largest life yet! I think the Nederlander is the perfect location for the show and it will be a nice show-to-production fit. I look forward to seeing the show and many of my Broadway favorite’s back on The Great White Way!
