The kids on Grymes Hill at Wagner College performing in the nationally recognized theatre department are anything but kids. In fact, these young adults and aspiring theatre professionals have made a name for themselves in the less than 50 year history the department has existed. This fall, they’re celebrating yet another honor headed their way. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Wagner College Theatre has been voted Staten Island’s Best Theatre Company for 2015!

For the second year in a row, Wagner College Theatre has been voted Staten Island’s Best Theatre Company by readers of the Staten Island Advance on their annual SILive.com Poll. The Staten Island Reader’s Choice Awards is an annual contest held online allowing readers to vote for their favorite arts and entertainment acts across the borough. In the category of Best Theatre Company, Wagner College Theatre came in first with The Harbor Lights Theatre Company in second and the Staten Island Shakespearean Theatre in third. Wagner’s win comes with over double the amount of votes for the second place finish.

tn-500_3889The acknowledgement for the nationally ranked theatre program comes just a few months after Wagner College Theatre ranked #2 on the Princeton Review’s Best College Theatre list. The program has made the list for over a decade now and has in the past 10 years consistently ranked in the top five list. Just during the 2014-15 season, Wagner College Theatre ranked #1. The program boosts an impressive list of alumni including Randy Graff, Christina DeCicco (Class of 2002), Brian Sgambati (Class of 1997), Renee Marino (Class of 2004) and Monette McKay (Class of 2007). The program is also currently represented on Broadway with Bret Shuford (Class of 2001) in the recently shuttered Amazing Grace, Katie O’Toole (Class of 2009) in Jersey BoysAlex Boniello (Class of 2013 & Pictured Above Left Singing) in Spring Awakening, Emilia Martin (Class of 2007) working behind the scenes on Spring Awakening and Allie Dufford (Class of 2013) working behind the scenes on School of Rock. The college was honored in 2011 with the Emerging Young Artist Award by Council for the Arts and Humanities for Staten Island for its continued work to produce theatrical professionals not only heading to Broadway but to national and international tours, regional theaters and cruise ships around the world.

  • I think one of their most successful grads,  Kathy Brier, has been left out.

    • We couldn’t agree more! Of course, this was just a sampling of some of Wagner College Theatre’s success stories! There are so many including Kathy Brier who we personally are big fans of! Look for her name in an upcoming post featuring news on Wagner Alum! Thanks for the shoutout!
