The production heads to Broadway with a pool of talented stars who audiences have been more than lucky enough to see more and more on Broadway in past seasons. While you can’t argue this small play is a rival for the mega-musical CATS, it does, at the end of the day, simply come down to the love for man’s best friend. Another new play for the Broadway 2015-16 season officially is unleashed (Get it?!) tonight on stage! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Sylvia officially opens on Broadway tonight!

Sylvia is a play by A.R. Gurney that tells the story of one truly outspoken dog. The comedy follows the story of the canine as she befriends a New Yorker in Central Park and leaves her owner questioning where his loyalties lay. Changing not just his life but his wife’s as well, the play looks at commitment and the complexity of love. The play will leave the canine’s owner choosing between the love of his life and man’s best friend.

AnnaleighSylvia officially opens tonight at The Cort Theatre after beginning previews earlier this fall on October 2nd, 2015. Sylvia is a strictly limited engagement playing through January 24th, 2016. Sylvia premiered Off-Broadway in 1995 through Manhattan Theatre Club at Stage 1. The production ran over 150 performances. The production was headlined by Sarah Jessica Parker in the title role, wife of Tony Award winner Matthew Broderick, and also included Blythe Danner and Charles Kimbrough. The original production was nominated for three Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Play.

8065_1Before this fall, I did not know much about the play Sylvia. However, when the production was announced last season set to feature Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford, I was even more excited to see what the production was about this fall! While I was not able to catch her performance (The one that snagged her a Tony Award) in You Can’t Take It With You last season, I last saw Ashford perform in Kinky Boots while its original Broadway cast was still in tact. She was simply fantastic bringing so much to the musical comedy! I’m looking forward to seeing Sylvia and seeing her take on this dynamic role that seems so exciting for any actor/actress who is given the opportunity to play it. I’m also happy to see a Off-Broadway production moving to Broadway, despite it being 20 years later and for a limited engagement. I think it is so important that producers continue to bring previous works seen on a smaller scale to a larger scale so they can be more accessible to larger audience bases. I hope many have the opportunity to see this show during its New York run!

Don’t miss your chance to see Sylvia during its strictly limited engagement on Broadway! This beloved production centered around man’s best friend is sure to have dog lovers questioning where their loyalty lies!
