Prince Of Broadway Officially Opens In Japan

Prince-of-Broadway-600dpi-FINAL-Prince-APPRVDWe’re headed to the other side of the world today to bring you some truly exciting theatre news! No, really! While theatre in Asia is something we’ve never covered on our blog before, I guess there is always a time to start! Musicals and musical theatre are huge in Asia. It is important to note especially in South Korea and Japan, audiences absolutely love American musical theatre! Many Broadway productions that did not score well here, have gone onto bigger lives across the globe. However, we’re headed there today as a potentially Broadway-bound production is making it’s debut! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Prince Of Broadway officially opens tonight in Japan!

Prince Of Broadway is a new musical that celebrates that work and career of Tony Award winning producer and director Hal Prince. The musical features music and lyrics from the many shows over Prince’s career with a book by two-time Tony Award nominee David Thompson. Three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown provides musical supervision and arrangements. As mentioned, the musical covers the career of Hal Prince examining the circumstances and forntune, both good and bad, that led to his creation of some of the most beloved musicals of all time. Shows you can expect to be represented in Prince of Broadway include The Pajama Game, West Side Story, Fiorello!, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Evita and The Phantom of the Opera to name a few.

b_tokyu_theatre_orb_010Tonight will mark the first performance of Prince Of Broadway in Tokyo, Japan! The first performance will serve as the musical’s official opening as well! The show is playing the Tokyu Theatre Orb (Pictured Right) in Tokyo, Japan through November 22nd, 2015. The production will than transfer to Osaka, Japan where it will play the Umeda Arts Theatre’s Main Hall from November 28th, 2015 through December 10th. The production rehearsed in New York City for the past several weeks before heading to Japan.

Screen Shot 2015-10-23 at 11.19.52 AMThe cast for Prince Of Broadway is not only a cast of Broadway all-stars and veterans but was handpicked by the Tony Award winner himself. The cast includes Emily Skinner, Tony Yazbeck, Josh Grisetti, Shuler Hensley, Ramin Karimloo, Nancy Opel, Bryonha Marie Parham, Mariand Torres, Kaley Ann Voorhees and Reon Yuzuki. Understudies for the production are Eric Van Tielen and Erin Clemons. The cast is pictured left with most of the creative including Tony Award Stephen Sondheim who dropped by rehearsal one day.

It seems only appropriate that Hal Prince is on board to bring his life work back to the stage. He serves as co-director of the musical with five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, who is also choreographing. Fred Lassen is musical director. The rest of the creative team includes Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt as scenic designer, six-time Tony Award winner William Ivey Long as costume designer, Sonoyo Niskikawa as lighting designer and Koichi Yamamoto as sound designer. Paul Huntley provides a wig design.

haroldprinceThe fact that Prince of Broadway is opening tonight in Japan is a miracle in itself! The production, when it was first announced, was slated for a U.S. premiere and potential Broadway run. However, with a financing issue, the production look slated to be cancelled. However, producers from Japan, who Hal Prince (Pictured Right) noted in an interview “had been there since day 1”, offered to produce the show in Japan. Rehearsals took place here in New York over the past several weeks before the cast and creative team headed around the world to bring the musical to the stage in Japan. Prince of Broadway, I believe, is still eyeing a potential Broadway bow sometime in the near future. Nothing at this time has been confirmed about a run in New York. We’d love to see the review for the legendary 21-time Tony Award winner take Broadway! Review shows for iconic theatre people who have shaped Broadway and the art itself is nothing new to The Great White Way. These shows have often scored well with audiences as they bring to life some of musical theatre’s greatest memories in one production celebrating one iconic figure. However, we believe this production shadowing Prince and the all-star cast attached to it, would score big on Broadway where Hal Prince is simply a legendary name.

Luner on Theatre will keep you up to date on Prince of Broadway during its premiere in Japan and a potential Broadway run! We look forward to hearing what audiences think about this production and seeing how it is received! Check back next week for a first look at the production on stage! Until we know the production is Broadway bound, do yourself a favor and go listen to the musicals Hal Prince shaped changing Broadway and American musical theatre forever. For more information, visit Prince Of Broadway’s Official Website, Facebook Page or Twitter(Copyright Note;Unless noted, we do not own/claim ownership for any photos used in this postAnd of course, be sure to check out the rest of Luner on Theatre for all your theatre news you don’t only need but want to know!
