Broadway Bound Gotta Dance Announces Full Cast
Chicago has no doubt mastered the role of being the ultimate “tryout” city for Broadway. With recent Broadway productions like On Your Feet and Kinky Boots which started in the city and more still brewing there, such as First Wives Club, which are aiming for a Broadway bow someday, Chicago is increasingly becoming “the step” before Broadway. Producers take note and we’re headed back to the windy city today as another production aiming for Broadway is getting itself together! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news of the full cast for the Broadway bound Gotta Dance!
Gotta Dance is a new musical that features music by Tony Award nominee Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin with a book by Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin and Tony Award winner Bob Martin. The show will also feature additional music by the late Tony & Oscar Award winner Marvin Hamlisch. The musical tells the true story of a group of senior citizens determined to dance at a half time performance for a major NBA team. While they’ll eventually make the cut to perform, they won’t be tap or swinging dancing like they’re use. Instead, the group is about to master the element of hip hop. They battle pain, self-doubt and one another for the chance to dance in front of 20 thousands screaming fans.
Gotta Dance is set to make its world premiere and pre-Broadway run at Chicago’s Bank of America Theatre later this season! The show will begin previews December 13th, 2015 and officially open December 28th. The show will run as a limited engagement through January 10th, 2016. The show is aiming for a Broadway bow in Spring 2016 according to the press release. At this time no official theatre or dates have been set for a New York/Broadway run.
Casting is now complete for the Chicago run of the production! The cast includes Tony Award winner Lillias White, Tony Award nominee Andre De Shields, five-time Emmy Award nominee Georgia Engel with Stefanie Powers, Haven Burton, Lori Tan Chinn, Jonalyn Saxer, Nancy Ticotin, Madeleine Doherty, Tracy Jai Edwards, Diane Findlay, Lenora Nemetz, Kay Walbye, Alexander Aguilar, Adinah Alexander, Sydni Beaudoin, Holly Ann Butler, Paula Castelon, Ari Groover, Colby Lewis, Lance Roberts, Elise Santora, Austin Scott III and Virginia Ann Woodruff.
Gotta Dance is helmed by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell serving as director and choreographer. Nick Kenkel is on board as co-choreographer.The rest of the creative team includes David Rockwell as scenic designer, Gregg Barnes as costume designer, Kenneth Posner as lighting designer and Peter Hylenski as sound designer. Larry Hochman is providing orchestrations with Charlie Alterman set to serve as musical director.
I must admit, I am a sucker for anything Jerry Mitchell works on! The Tony Award winning director and choreographer, currently represented on Broadway with On Your Feet! and the Tony Award winning Kinky Boots, is one of my Broadway favorites. Mitchell’s work, whether its as director, choreographer or both, always feels fresh, sharp and provides Broadway with a boost of energy it didn’t know it needed! Gotta Dance truly sounds like a lot of fun! When first hearing about the production, I honestly assumed it would be more of a revue show. I’m excited to see the show has lined up an original book and score for its run! Also, I failed to realize how fast Gotta Dance was headed to Broadway. I assumed there was a season between it’s premiere and a potential Broadway run! While that could happen, the show reports it is aiming for a Broadway bow in 2016 during the spring. If I had to get all Broadway real estate and landlordy on you, I would guess the show will bow at The Neil Simon Theatre. The only show lined up for the theatre is The Illusionists: Live On Broadway which ends in January. Mitchell is also no stranger to this house with Catch Me If You Can and Hairspray, two of his previous works, running at this theatre. However, only time will tell!
Luner on Theatre will keep you updated as Gotta Dance heads into rehearsal and towards its world premiere later this season in Chicago! As mentioned above, the show is aiming for a bow on Broadway as early as this spring! We will also keep you updated on the show’s future in New York on Broadway!
