The Gin Game Officially Opens On Broadway
Some Broadway plays never see the daylight of a revival. Most productions that do receive revivals, often find themselves located somewhere else than the original Broadway house the show began in how many years ago. So how often does it occur a Broadway revival takes place in the same Broadway house where the show debuted? Not often. But when it comes to this show, that’s exactly the case. Add in two Broadway/entertainment legends and we’ve got our second play revival of the 2015-16 season! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that The Gin Game officially opens on Broadway tonight!
The Gin Game is a play by D.L. Coburn that tells the story of two nursing home patients whose game of gin rummy turns into more than your average game. Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey meet on the porch of the nursing home they both live at and Weller teaches Fonsia how to play gin rummy. Taking better at the game than he expected, Fonsia wins hand after hand and Weller becomes frustrated. Their conversation takes a turn for the worse as it changes from about the lives they led before ending up here turns into a battleground of failures and insecurities. The play received the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The Gin Game officially opens tonight at The John Golden Theatre after beginning previews earlier this fall on September 23rd, 2015. The show is running as a strictly limited engagement through January 10th, 2016 only. The Gin Game premiered on Broadway in 1977 debuting at The John Golden Theatre. Directed by the legendary Mike Nichols, the show starred the married couple Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. The play was revived on Broadway in 1997, this time at the Lyceum Theatre, starring Charles Durning and Julie Harris.
Leading The Gin Game back to Broadway is two legends; Tony Award winners James Earl Jones and Cicely Tyson. The two reunite onstage for the first time in almost in 50 years since they first performed together in 1966 in A Hand Is On The Gate at the Longacre Theatre. James Earl Jones is a two-time Tony Award winner who most recently appeared on Broadway in You Can’t Take It With You last season. While he has been seen both on the stage and screen, he is best known for his voice roles as Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King. He is a three-time Emmy Award winner in addition to being the recipient of the Screen Actor’s Guild Lifetime Achievement Award and Academy Honorary Award. Cicely Tyson is a Tony Award winner who most recently appeared on Broadway in The Trip To Bountiful in 2013. Much like her co-star, Tyson’s work has been seen both on stage and screen. She is a three-time Emmy Award winner in addition to being nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards. She was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the film Sounder and most recently appeared on How To Get Away With Murder.
Leonard Foglia helms the production team serving as the director for the show. The rest of the creative team includes Riccardo Hernandez as scenic and costume designer, Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer as lighting designer and David Van Tieghem as sound designer. OSTAR Productions produces the Broadway return.
Wow! As if revivals returning to Broadway weren’t exciting enough, what a line up to bring The Gin Game back to Broadway. Both Jones and Tyson have had incredible careers in the entertainment and theatre industry! This is truly one of the star-studded productions to keep an eye on this season. I should also mention just how incredible it is that Jones and Tyson are still performing. Jones is 84 and Tyson is 90. Just incredible! I really hope I get a chance to see this show with both of these legends performing in it! I remember thinking when Tyson won the Tony Award for Trip To Bountiful that it may be her last Broadway outing. I love standing here proved wrong. And I look forward to seeing what these two do on Broadway even beyond this production.
