Play Ball! Wagner College Theatre Kicks Off Season With Damn Yankees
Wagner College Theatre is ready for a home-run hit as the theatre program kicks off its 2015-16 season tonight! Located in Staten Island, New York, the nationally recognized theatre program has loaded the bases for a season filled with incredible talent on and off the stage as they prepare for another season in the spotlight. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Wagner College Theatre kicks off its 2015-16 season tonight with Damn Yankees!
Damn Yankees is a musical that features music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross with book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop. The musical , set in the glory days of the 1950s when baseball ruled the American society, follows the story of baseball diehard Joe Boyd. Boyd trades his soul to the devil for a chance to lead his favorite team, the Washington Senators, to victory as the season comes down to the pennant against the New York Yankees. Everything changes though when he realize’s the life and his love, Meg, he’s left behind. Will Joe leave the fame he has made for himself to return to the normal life he had or stick it out to win the pennant for his team they truly deserve?
Wagner College Theatre kicks off its 48th season tonight with Damn Yankees, the first of 9 productions it is slated to produce this season! The show runs September 30th through October 3rd with a second week running October 7th through October 11th. All performances are at 8 PM with a 2 PM matinée on October 3rd and 10th. There is only a 2 PM performance on October 11th. Damn Yankees first premiered on Broadway in 1955 at the 46th Street Theatre (Richard Rodgers) and met much success. In addition to running for a total of 1,019 performances, the original Broadway production was nominated for seven Tony Awards and won six of them including Best Musical. The musical received a Broadway revival in 1994 that ran for just over 700 performances.
Wagner College Theatre’s production features Joe O’Malley as Applegate (Pictured Above Bottom), Jesse Pimpinella as Joe Hard (Pictured Above Top), Emma Pittman as Lola (Pictured Above Right), Chris Zika as Joe Boyd, Taylor Baskin as Meg Boyd, Joshua Sottile as Rocky, Nick Manna as Smokey, Courtney McGowan as Gloria Thorpe, Greg Ippolito as Van Buren, Noah Bridgestock as Vernon, Adam Goldenberg as Mr. Welch, Becca Barrett as Sister and Katie Quann as Doris.
The ensemble features Nicholas Barakos, Bobbi Barricella, Addi Berry, Brianna Brice, Jacob Cowan, Kyle Johnson, Sabrina Kalman, Dean Marino, Nick Mestakides, Jonathan Quigley, Alec Reiss, Tyler Roberts, Sydni Session, Mackenzie Shay, and Clint Maddox Thompson.
Following the success of Monty Python’s Spamalot last season, Mickey Tennenbaum (Pictured Right) returns to direct and helm Damn Yankees. Wagner College Theatre’s Head of Dance, Rusty Curcio, choreographs the production with Wagner Alum Matt Hosmer (WCT ’13) as musical director. The rest of the creative team includes Richard Kendrick as scenic designer, Vicki Neal as lighting designer, Kurt Alger as costume designer and Richard Kroth as sound designer. Wagner College Theatre is a nationally ranked college theatre program located at Wagner College on Staten Island in New York City. The theatre program, which has been around since the 1960′s, has worked its way up to become one of the top ranked theatre programs by The Princeton Review. It has remained in the Top 5 Programs for the past 10 years and this past year ranked in at #2 in the nation. The program boosts a wonderful list of alumni and produces eight productions a year with four on the Main Stage and four in the Stage One Studio. Slated to hit the stage later this season on the Main Stage is The Most Happy Fella, Iolanthe and A Chorus Line while the Stage One Studio Theatre kicks off with a double bill of Dutchman & 21 Chump Street followed by The Tempest, the premiere of New York Lands and The Dance Project.
