Tony Time: Nominations for Best Scenic Design of a Play (Photos)

From the world of Christopher’s mind to the court of King Henry VIII, Broadway scenic designers managed to outdo themselves this season in the play category bringing to life epic spectacle in a world much more contained than musical theatre. From revivals to new brand new works, plays on Broadway this season pushed scenic designers to the edge as they brought to life worlds both new and old equaling the playing field in a season filled with many notable hits. Much like our musical scenic design post, this post brings you a look at models, sketches, renderings which all happen before an audience ever sits in front of these sets in the theatre. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you an exciting look at the play scenic designs nominated for this year’s Tony Awards!

Congratulations to this year’s nominees! Plays have truly pushed themselves to a new level this season between new and revival works asking the most of its designers. Audiences for several productions, some above and not listed, have audiences talking as they bring to life designs one would not typically expect for a Broadway play. I look forward to seeing this continue and grow in future seasons. For complete coverage, visit Luner on Theatre’s Tony Time Page!
