2015 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award Winners Announced
It’s only fitting that one of the first awards of the season to be given is that by those who not only attend all of the productions but also cover them. The New York Drama Critics’ Circle is made up of those who work in the New York region not only reviewing shows but providing press as well for theatre productions each season. Obviously, the people who see it all would have an opinion when it comes to what is the best production each year. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news of the 2015 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award Winners!
Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Between Riverside and Crazy (Pictured Below Left) and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton (Pictured Right) musical have been named the winners of the 2015 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards! Between Riverside and Crazy, which also recently won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, was name Best Play while Hamilton was named Best Musical. This year, special citations where also given to Ars Nova, the Off-Broadway company, for bringing daring new work to New York City as well as scenic and costume designer Bob Crowley. The announcement was made by NYDCC president, Adam Feldman, who is also the theatre critic for Time Out New York. Feldman has served as president since 2005. Elisabeth Vincentelli of the New York Post serves as vice president; Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News is treasurer.
Each year, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle awards productions as well as specific individuals and/or groups for their outstanding contributions to theatre in New York. The circle comprises of 23 drama critics from newspapers, magazines, websites and more. The awards first began in 1936 and originally only honored the best new play of the season. It is the second oldest theatre award in the nation following the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Leading behind Feldman is Elisabeth Vincentelli of the New York Post who serves as vice president and Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News who serves as treasurer. Those who make up the New York Drama Critics’ Circle include Hilton Als (The New Yorker); Melissa Rose Bernardo (Entertainment Weekly); David Cote (Time Out New York); Michael Feingold (TheaterMania); Robert Feldberg (Bergen Record); Elysa Gardner (USA Today); Jeremy Gerard (Deadline); Jesse Green (New York); Mark Kennedy (Associated Press); David Rooney (Hollywood Reporter); Frank Scheck (New York Post); Tom Sellar (Village Voice); David Sheward (Theaterlife); John Simon (Yonkers Tribune); Marilyn Stasio (Variety); Zachary Stewart (TheaterMania); Terry Teachout (Wall Street Journal); Matt Windman (AMNewYork); Linda Winer (Newsday); and Richard Zoglin (Time). Emeritus members include David Finkle, Brian Scott Lipton, Michael Sommers and Steven Suskin.
