The Tony Awards, the biggest achievement in American musical theatre, is thee most celebrated night for the Broadway community each year. The night honors and celebrates the season that has just come an end while also highlighting theatre as a whole. This celebration needs a host. While the job’s duty list has continued to grow as hosts of the past continue to out do one another, this year’s announcement comes with double the host meaning double the fun! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Tony Award winners Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth will host the 2015 Tony Awards Ceremony!

The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing proudly announced this morning the long-awaited news of who would host The 2015 Tony Awards! As mentioned above, it was announced Tony Award winners Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth would co-host the awards ceremony set to hit the stage on June 7th at Radio City Music Hall. The announcement, which usually comes weeks before the nominations are made public, was held off this year longer than it has been in recent years. Last year, Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman hosted the ceremony and was announced in February. Currently, there are only 6 weeks left until this year’s ceremony. This will be the first time in over a decade (Since 2002) that the ceremony will be co-hosted. In 2002, Bernadette Peters and Gregory Hines co-hosted like from Radio City.

Best-Neil-Patrick-HarrisThe job of hosting the Tony Awards ceremony is no easy one. In fact, it’s a job that has jumped to be one of the most admired hosting positions following the lengths of Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris who have launched the ceremony into the national spotlight following routines, musical numbers and other jokes they have pulled throughout the ceremony. Just last year, Hugh Jackman hopped his way into hosting and kicked off the show featuring just about every show in the 2013-14 Broadway season. Of course, this was the definition of a hard act to follow just one year after Neil Patrick Harris kicked off the 2013 Tony Awards with what one may argue, was the greatest musical number ever to be performed live in the history of television.

In the past decade, only four people have hosted the Tony Awards ceremony. Those are Hugh Jackman (2003, 2004, 2005, 2014), Whoopi Goldberg (2008), Sean Hayes (2010) and Neil Patrick Harris (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013). Earlier this season, Neil confirmed he would not host the ceremony this season and who could blame him following a year after he just served as the host for the Oscars. However, the announcement of co-hosts for the ceremony was an interesting one and one I would say many did not expect. Some very famous duos have co-hosted the ceremony before such as Rosie O’Donnell with Nathan Lane, Nathan Lane with Matthew Broderick, Julie Andrews with Robert Preston and George Abbott with Ginger Rogers. The notion of co-hosting is nothing new to the Tony Awards.

66th Annual Tony Awards - ShowHowever, how will Kristin and Alan up the ceremony as another year comes to an end on Broadway? The Tony Awards ceremony has grown because Broadway has grown in several instances. Its grown in the sense of how many people are now involved and working in the business and also in how many people adore it. Broadway itself has become a brand and the Tony Awards are now something that comes along with that. Countless theatre fans across the country make this out to be a night bigger than the Oscars, Golden Globes or countless other ceremonies many other average Americans tune into. Kristin and Alan have a huge job ahead of them. I have no doubt in the great work they will do and I look forward to the countless gags and musical bits they plan to fill the night with.

The 2015 Tony Awards will hit the stage LIVE at Radio City Music Hall on June 7th, 2015! Hosted by Tony Award winners Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth, the ceremony will celebrate the end of the 2014-15 Broadway season while honoring the best of the best in the most anticipated night of theatre for America!
