Somewhere that’s green? If there isn’t enough green already scheduled to be on stage for the Encores! Off-Center production of Little Shop of Horrors this summer, you might wanna check the box office! While the brand new Off-Center series at New York’s City Center has become a hit in recent years, the series has managed to top itself once again this summer with a stellar season in store! While things are already looking good for the series, they just got even better as some casting for just one of its production this summer was announced today which is sure to send fans into the box office to purchase tickets for this exciting event. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Jake Gyllenhaal will star in Encores! Off-Center production of Little Shop Of Horrors!
Jake Gyllenhaal is an a 34-year-old American actor. He has appeared in over a dozen films including The Good Girl, The Day After Tomorrow, Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Love & Other Drugs, Source Code, End of Watch, Prisoners and most recently, Nightcrawler. He received a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for this performance in Brokeback Mountain. Gyllenhaal has appeared on the London stage in This Is Our Youth, which came to Broadway earlier this season. On Broadway, Gyllenhaal made his New York stage debut in 2012 in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet. He appeared on Broadway once again earlier this season in Constellations opposite Ruth Wilson.
Encores! Off-Center productions proudly announced today that Jake Gyllenhaal would join their slated production of Little Shop of Horrors scheduled for this July starring in the role of Seymour. The production will appear only for July 1st and 2nd at 7:30 PM. However, due to a mass demand in tickets, there will be an added matinée on July 2nd. Little Shop of Horrors premiered Off-Broadway in 1982 at Orpheum Theatre in the East Village. The production was critically acclaimed and won several major awards including New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. The production ran for 5 years and at that time, was the third longest running Off-Broadway musical ever and highest grossing. The production got a Broadway outing (Pictured Left) in 2003 at the Virginia Theatre (Now the August Wilson) and ran for just over a year closing in 2004. This production will be directed by Dick Scanlan and choreographed by Patricia Wilcox.
Gyllenhaal will star opposite the previously announced Ellen Greene (Pictured Left), who is set to star as Audrey. Greene is known for creating the role on stage and screen. Other cast members include Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper as The Voice of Audrey II and Taran Killam as Orin. The Urchins will be portrayed by Caroline, or Change‘s Tracy Nicole Chapman, Marva Hicks and Ramona Keller. Additional casting is set to be announced at a later date.
WOW! As if the Encores! Off-Center production series for this summer was not already looking hot, things just got even hotter! The addition of Gyllenhaal to Little Shop Of Horrors is truly exciting as the star heads into the musical world following only appearing on stage in straight plays before. While many were already excited for the return of Little Shop, this addition will most likely make tickets impossible to obtain. The production has already lined up several major wins before this announcement even came about. First of all, they have slated Ellen Green to return to the role she created. She is a fan favorite and many are excited to see her back in this role. Second, they lined up the ladies form Caroline or Change who are also fan favorites in the musical theatre world. I hope I get a chance to see Little Shop of Horrors during it’s New York return as it looks to be a star-studded event.
