Roundabout Theatre Company is bringing the critically acclaimed McCarter Theatre/Fiasco Theatre production of Into The Woods Off-Broadway! Into The Woods is a musical that features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical tells the story of a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family. After an interaction with a witch who places a curse on them, the two set off on a journey to begin their family and run into many fairytale creatures and storybook characters along their way. The musical looks at the idea of wishes, their power and even more importantly, what happens when they really do come true. This new rendition of Into The Woods is incredibly stripped down to it’s bare bones. The musical uses 10 actors, a piano and the imagination of it’s audience to create the world of the woods in a way never before seen.

jpintothewoods-articleLarge-v2I am definitely looking forward to this brand new version of Into The Woods playing in New York! Into the Woods is one of those classic productions that just about everyone has seen and just about everyone knows the way of going about this show. While I’m not trying to say all productions of Into The Woods are the same, for the most part, many follow the same approach which there is nothing wrong with. The McCarter has invented something totally new here from existing material. This new production of Into the Woods is sure not only to be exciting but will hopefully inspire the way we look at musicals we have become familiar with. This applies especially for Into The Woods since the characters are taken from other stories which we also have all grown up with.

Into The Woods begins performances this Holiday season! While Broadway may be calling, don’t be afraid to head Off-Broadway to experience this one of a kind re-imagining of this classic Broadway musical! The production runs only through March 22nd! And don’t forget, be careful what you wish for!
