Hand To God Will Come to Broadway in Spring 2015
Return of the Puppets! A decade after Avenue Q premiered on Broadway and took the theatre world by storm, puppets are still making headlines in the New York theatre world! It looks as though a brand new puppet will headline Broadway this spring next to a long line of highly anticipated plays in one of Broadway’s most iconic houses! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that the critically acclaimed Hand To God will play Broadway this spring!
Hand To God is a play written by Robert Askins which tells the story of Jason, a shy student who finds an outlet of creativity at the Christian Puppet Ministry which is devoutly religious. Located in the small quiet town of Cypress, Texas, Jason’s relationships are put to the test as his hand puppet, Tyrone, which one was soft-spoken, takes on a shocking and dangerous personality all on its own. Tyrone’s influence over Jason grows as time passes and his complicated relationships with the town pastor, girl next door, school bully and his mother become even more complication. The play looks at and explores our fragile human nature and the things that bind us together like faith and morality.
Producer Kevin McCollum proudly announced today that Hand To God would return to New York City to bow on Broadway this spring. The show will begin previews March 12th, 2015 and officially open on April 7th at The Booth Theatre. Hand To God originally premiered off-Broadway at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in 2011. Following critical acclaim, the production returned last year Off-Broadway to the Lucille Lortel Theatre through MCC Theatre. Last season’s return engagement was also critically acclaimed.
The complete cast of the 2014 MCC Theatre run of Hand To God will transfer to Broadway along with the show. The cast is led by Steven Boyer (Pictured Left) as Jason/Tyrone in his critically acclaimed performance. The rest of the cast includes Geneva Carr as Margery, Tony Award nominee Marc Kudisch as Pastor Greg, Sarah Stiles as Jessica and Michael Oberholtzer as Timmy.

He was the recipient of the Obie and Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Play. He was also recognized by Actor’s Equity with the Clarence Derwent Award for Most Promising Newcomer and the Drama League for Distinguished Performance. His return in leading the Broadway bow is not only pivotal but incredibly exciting!
The announce of Hand To God transferring to Broadway is incredibly exciting! I remember last season how much great word of mouth and critical acclaim this piece received during it’s run downtown. Back then, many mentioned a transfer to Broadway but it was not widely talked about. Upon the show closing, not much has been heard of it. Upon today’s announcement of the production’s return, the internet was a buzz with much rejoice was many looked forward to seeing the show again on Broadway and many looked forward to experiencing it for the first time. Luner on Theatre did not have a chance to check out this production last spring so we are highly looking forward to the Broadway run so we can experience this piece we’ve heard only wonderful things about. It’s also worth mentioning many before Hand To God ever announced itself talked about the Best Play category this season and how difficult it is looking to shape up to be. Hand To God only makes things even more difficult as Broadway this season, fall and spring, is looking to be flooded with some of the most highly anticipated straight plays in a number of years.
Hand to God will officially begin previews on Broadway March 12th, 2015! The announcement of the production’s transfer not only adds to the list of highly anticipated plays on Broadway this season especially this spring but also adds a solid piece of theatre to the 2015 spring season which currently many don’t know what it will look like.
