Beautiful: The Carole King Musical Recoups on Broadway
Recouping on Broadway is no easy business! Actually, most Broadway shows never go on to recoup! With the cost of producing musical theatre rising every single day, musicals on Broadway can now range between $7 to $15 million dollars to produce as their initial investment. However, there are certain shows that become box office gold! Connecting with the audience, containing material they wanna see and bringing to life musical theatre at its finest, Broadway has seen it’s fair share of hits. We have no doubt in saying the latest member to join this club is a musical that opened not even a year ago. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Beautiful: The Carole King musical has recouped on Broadway!
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a jukebox musical that features the music of Carole King with a book by Douglas McGrath. The musical tells the story of Carole King, originally Carol Klein, who was just a girl from Brooklyn with a passion for music. The story begins as she fights her way into the business as just a young teenager and follows her as she becomes a superstar writing hits for some of the biggest names in the business by her twenties. However, when her marriage and personal life hit the rocks, we finally discover the true voice of Carole King. Beautiful tells the story of Carole’s marriage to husband and fellow song-writer Gerry Goffin, her friendship with best friends Cynthia Weil and Barr Mann and her journey to becoming one of the most iconic performers of a generation.
Producers of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical proudly announced that the production has recouped its entire $13 million dollar investment! The musical began previews on Broadway last November and opened in January 2014 to strong acclaim. The musical was nominated for seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. The production went on to win two Tony Awards including one for Jessie Mueller, who portrays King in the stage adaptation of her life. Beautiful is the very first musical of the 2013-14 season to recoup its investment on Broadway.

“Beautiful has become a bona-fide phenomenon and we couldn’t be more pleased and proud.”

Congratulations to Beautiful on the exciting news of recouping on Broadway! Many productions that hit Broadway will never recoup. Actually, most Broadway musicals do in fact lose money in the end. However, whenever any production recoup, we find it a cause for celebration! I was lucky enough to see Beautiful last December before it officially opened and fell in love with the show. It is absolutely wonderful and has such a great heart at the center of it. Beautiful is a Broadway jukebox musical for a new generation. It takes music, beloved by a generation, and throws it to the stage in one of the best jukebox musicals to ever come to Broadway. I’m excited London and many across the U.S. will also have a chance to experience this production as it makes its way into theatrical venues across the nation and world!
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical can currently be seen on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on 43rd Street! And if you can’t make it to New York to see this spectacular production, have no fear! It will be hopping across the pond in just a couple of months only to be followed by it making its way out on the road for the rest of the U.S. to experience!
