Michael C. Hall will step into Hedwig And The Angry Inch
No lament for Hedwig! Broadway’s Tony Award winning Best Musical Revival is making headlines today as it has proudly announced who its next star to appear in the title role will be. While many have wondered if the production would shutter upon Andrew Rannells exit, many have eagerly awaited the news of the next big name to step in on Broadway. So who is it? It’s a name you know but definitely not one you expected. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Michael C. Hall will appear as the next Hedwig in Hedwig And The Angry Inch on Broadway!
Hedwig And The Angry Inch is a rock musical that features a book by John Cameron Mitchell with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. The musical focuses on the story of East German transgendered singer Hedwig and is told through the form of an extended monologue. Hedwig is following rock star Tommy Gnosis’s successful tour around the country, which she references is playing in an adjoining venue, with her own band who appears on stage throughout the entire musical. The Broadway rendition of the musical is told from the perspective of Hedwig moving into the Broadway theatre on the set of a musical that once played there.
Producers of the Tony Award winning Best Musical Revival Hedwig And The Angry Inch proudly announced the latest star who will step into the fish nets to strut through the role of Hedwig on Broadway. Michael C. Hall, best known for his role on TV’s Dexter, will officially take on the role beginning October 16th, 2014. Hall is set to appear as the transgendered singer through the new year performing in the title role through January 4th, 2015 at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway.
Michael C. Hall is a 43-year-old American actor best known for his roles as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s TV series Dexter and as David Fisher in Six Feet Under on HBO. He has won both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as Dexter. He is also a five-time Emmy Award nominee. Despite being best known for his roles on television, Hall’s acting career actually began on stage. He has been seen in Skylight, Mr. Marmalade, Cymbeline, Macbeth, Timon of Athens and Henry V, The English Teachers, Corpus Christi and Romeo and Juliet. Hall’s musical debut was in 1999 when he appeared as the Emcee in Roundabout Theatre Company’s Cabaret on Broadway. This will mark his first return to musical theatre since playing that role over 10 years ago. Hall was also just seen on Broadway last seen in Will Eno’s The Realistic Joneses.
Hedwig And The Angry Inch first appeared on Broadway last spring beginning previews March 29th, 2014 and officially opened April 22nd at the Belasco Theatre. It was nominated for several Tony Awards and went on to win three including Best Musical Revival. The musical kicked off its Broadway debut with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. NPH went on to win the 2014 Tony Award for his performance. Since departing in late August, the title role has been taken over by Tony nominee Andrew Rannells who is appearing through October 12th. Hedwig first appeared on the stage Off-Broadway in 1998 downtown at the Jane Street Theatre where it played over 850 performances from 1998 through 2000. Originally, book writer John Cameron Mitchell starred as Hedwig.
Michael C. Hall? Well played Hedwig! The theatre world, including myself, was just beginning to wonder who would play the next Hedwig on Broadway with just about a month left to go in Andrew Rannell’s contract. Would it be a Broadway star like Andrew Rannells? Or a Hollywood star like Neil Patrick Harris? So what did Hedwig do? It gave us a little bit of both. While Michael C. Hall is best known for his performances on TV, he is hands down no stranger to the Broadway stage. He was just around the block at The Lyceum last season for Will Eno’s The Realistic Joneses. And now, he is set to appear in his first musical since appearing as the Emcee in Roundabout’s Cabaret over 10 years ago (Which I managed to find a picture of above). From reactions we are already seeing, many are incredibly excited about this! As are we! We definitely are looking forward to seeing Hall in the role! And hey, maybe if it all turns out so great, he can head up the block to Cabaret and reprise his role if Alan Cummings is interested in taking a night off.
Michael C. Hall will officially step into the role of Hedwig in Hedwig And The Angry Inch on Broadway come October 16th! Don’t miss your chance to see this five time Emmy Award nominee in what is sure to be the performance of a lifetime with killer music, high heels and a star you just can’t help but love!
