On the Twentieth Century Will Return to Broadway in Spring 2015
Despite the fact that we haven’t even finished the Spring 2014 season yet on Broadway, that didn’t stop Roundabout Theatre Company today from announcing a new production in the works for the Spring 2015 season on Broadway. The not for profit theatre company announced an exciting new revival on their boards already set to help fill a season filled with hits such as Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing and Sondheim’s Into The Woods. So what exactly could top all this?! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Roundabout Theatre Company has announced they plan to revive On The Twentieth Century on Broadway in Spring 2015!
On The Twentieth Century is a musical that features music by Cy Coleman with a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. On a train ride from a Chicago to New York, bankrupt theatre producer Oscar Jaffe is on a mad mission. He is trying to win over Hollywood starlet Lily Garland into playing the lead into his new epic Broadway drama. Besides not having Garland, another problem exists; the show is non-existent. With hours to go and a long train ride ahead, will there be enough time to create a play from scratch, find all the money Jaffe needs for his Broadway show and time to reignite the spark between these former lovers?
Roundabout Theatre Company proudly announced yesterday its plans to revive the On The Twentieth Century in Spring 2015 on Broadway. The show is set to begin previews February 12th, 2015 and officially open on Broadway March 12th at the American Airlines Theatre. The show will play a limited engagement of 20 weeks only through July 5th, 2015. Starring in the revival of On The Twentieth Century will be Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth opposite. Golden Globe winner and Tony nominee Peter Gallagher.
Kristin Chenoweth is an American actress and singer best known for her roles played on Broadway. Chenoweth made her Broadway debut in 1997 in Steel Pier. This was followed by You’re A Goodman Charlie Brown, where she received a Tony Award for her role as Sally. Chenoweth may be best known for playing Glinda in the original cast of Wicked on Broadway. She received a Tony nomination for her role. She was last seen on Broadway during the 2010 revival of Promises, Promises. She has also appeared on television in Glee and Pushing Daisies.
Peter Gallagher is an American actor and musician who is best known for his roles in films and on television. He first appeared on Broadway in Grease! as Danny Zucko. Since than, he has appeared many times on Broadway including in A Doll’s Life, The Real Thing, Noises Off, Guys & Dolls and A Long Day’s Journey Into The Night. Two time Tony Award nominee Warren Carlyle is set to choreograph the production. He is represented this year and nominated for a Tony Award for his work on After Midnight. The rest of the creative team includes David Rockwell as scenic designer, William Ivey Long as costume designer and Donald Holder as lighting designer.
On The Twentieth Century made its Broadway debut in 1978 at the St. James Theatre. Despite the show only playing 11 previews and 449 performances, the production was nominated for 9 Tony Awards and went on to win 5 including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. The show has never been revived on Broadway. However, Roundabout has been in the works to do the show since a reading was done through their organization in 2005. Chenoweth was attached to the project than as well. While announcing On The Twentieth Century for spring 2015 at the American Airlines Theatre, Roundabout Theatre Company did also mention that they have postponed their scheduled revival of Noises Off until Fall 2015.
