You Can’t Take It With You Set For Broadway Revival
Today may be the cut off day for Broadway shows eligible for the 2013-2014 awards season but that isn’t stop producers from already looking ahead to next season on Broadway! With one new musical already lined up for next season (Holler If You Hear Me), it now looks as though we have our first play of the season set to go! If you’re wondering why you’ve heard the name of the play You Can’t Take It With You in recent years, its most likely because the show was set for a revival in 2010 season on Broadway. However, headed by different producers, that revival never ended up happening. 4 years and an entire different set of producers later, we’re happy to be bringing you the opposite news. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that James Earl Jones will star in an upcoming Broadway revival of You Can’t Take It With You!
Producers Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, Steve Traxler, Jessica Genick and Will Trice proudly announced today plans to bring You Can’t Take It With You back to Broadway beginning late Summer 2014. The show will begin previews in August and will officially open on Broadway September 28th, 2014. The Broadway theatre for the show has yet to be announced. However, the show will be presented in a Shubert Theatre. Tony Award nominee Scott Ellis (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), who is pictured right, is set to direct the play’s return to Broadway. You Can’t Take It With You premiered on Broadway at The Booth Theatre on December 14th, 1936. The show went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1937. The show has since been revived four times on Broadway. Pictured below to the left is the Playbill from the last Broadway revival of You Can’t Take It With You which took place in 1983. The show played The Plymouth Theatre, now known as The Gerald Schoenfeld.
You Can’t Take It With You is a play by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman which tells the story of two different families, the Kirbys and the Sycamores, whose worlds collide and couldn’t be more opposite. The two families are thrust towards each other as their children become engaged. Tony Kirby asks Alice Sycamore to marry him only after he brings his entire family to their house for an evening no one will forget. With the Sycamores mad and the Kirbys unhappy, anything is possibly as chaotic night ensues featuring arguments, laughs and a visit from the ex-Grand Duchess of Russia. The
Set to star in the revival is James Earl Jones as the grandfather, Martin Vanderhof. James Earl Jones is a Tony, Academy, Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor. He was born in January 1931 in Mississippi and has a career that has spanned over 50 years. He is best known for being the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars series and also Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King. He has been seen in recent television on The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, both times as himself. He has also been seen in recent movies such as Jack and the Beanstalk, Earth, The Benchwarmers, The Sandlot 2 and Disney’s American Legend. He was last seen on Broadway in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. The producers were asked today during their announcement if Jone’s race would play a role in the casting for the entire family as well. The producers announced they expected a multi-cultural cast to be selected for the production overall and not be race specific.
