Is Taylor Swift Broadway’s Next Celebrity Composer?

???????????????????????We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together! Will Taylor Swift soon be saying those words to the music world? More than likely not. However, that is not hindering the country star icon from looking at making a potential bow on Broadway. Thats right, the country music star known best for her personal songs and narrative stories in music may soon be writing the score to a show on the Great White Way.  Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the news that Taylor Swift may be trading in her usual tunes to pen the score for a potential upcoming Broadway show!

Taylor Swift is a seven time Grammy Award winning American songwriter and singer. Originally from Pennsylvania, Swift moved to Nashville at age 14 to pursue a career in music and quickly signed with a label becoming the youngest songwriter ever hired by a professional label. Since then, Swift has released four albums (Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red) which has sold over 26 million copies and 75 million single downloads. All of these accomplishments have made Swift one of the best-selling artists of all time. Some of her best known song titles are “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”, “I Knew You Were Trouble”, “Love Story”, “You Belong With Me” and “The Story Of Us”. In her spare time, Swift is known for doing outreach for charities involving sick children.

t100_weinsteinProducer Harvey Weinstein may be trying to bring the songwriting talents of Taylor Swift to Broadway sometime soon. The veteran Broadway producer, who is currently helming Finding Neverland to the stage for the American Repertory Theatre this summer, made sure the Grammy Award winning artist was in attendance at the April 1st presentation of the show in New York City. Other well know names like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Michelle Williams were also said to be in attendance.

Finding Neverland features a score by U.K. pop songwriters Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy. Weinstein reportedly already has an idea of a musical he is interested in having Swift work on. Weinstein was quoted “There’s a specific show I want her to write.”

634.TaylorSwift3.ms.011513So what exactly could Harvey Weinstein be interested in having Taylor Swift pen a score for? We aren’t entirely sure. Celebrity and music icons penning scores for Broadway musicals however is no new concept. It’s been done for the past several decades. Bono and The Edge recently penned the score for Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark while Phil Collins penned the score for Disney’s Tarzan musical back in 2006. Even recently, Cyndi Lauper penned the score last season for the Tony Award winning Best Musical Kinky Boots. Broadway will see other examples of celebrity scores on Broadway this season with Sony providing the music of Carole King for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and later this season, the lyrics and music of Tupac will appear in the new Broadway musical Holler If Ya Hear Me. But as for the musical Ms. Swift may right? I’m not entirely sure off the top of my head. I can imagine her music going well with some sort of movie adaptation that has a country side to it. Since Taylor’s country music is what has made her well-known, I can only imagine a Broadway production capitalizing off of that.

Only time will tell as the theatre world waits and wonders as if Taylor Swift will make her debut as a Broadway composer. While we aren’t sure of what musical Mr. Weinstein has in mind nor can think of one-off the top of our heads, we can jokingly say if it’s a love story involving heartbreak, the musical might just right up Ms. Swift’s ally.
