Christopher Durang to star in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

The regional playhouse, located in New Hope, Pennsylvania, was at one point in time one of the most beloved regional venues in America. After falling into despair and financial issues, the playhouse closed its doors for a shut while before being purchased, restored and renovated by Kevin Daugherty and Sherri Daugherty. The two have not only restored the venue itself but are slowly and surely restoring the name of one of America’s most beloved regional theatres will a knockout first season complete and stellar second season on the tracks ahead. As if their second season wasn’t already filled with great ideas and productions, it just got a boost from a new name in town that will be appearing this summer. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Tony Award winner Christopher Durang will star in his Tony Award winning play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike!

Christopher Durang is an award-winning playwright best known for his absurd comedies. Durang, originally from Montclair, New Jersey, was wildly popular during the 1980’s but his work is still often done today. His latest comedy, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, was the winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play and sent Durang back into the spotlight. He has not only written for theatre but also film and television. Durang has also made acting appearances in many films. His theatrical works include A History of the American Film (Tony nomination), Sister Mary Explains It All For YouBeyond Therapy, Baby With The Bathwater, The Marriage of Bette and BooSex and Longing, Laughing Wild, Betty’s Summer VacationMiss Witherspoon (2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist) and Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them.

bucks-county-playhouse-c41d8953f35ed462Producers at the Bucks County Playhouse, located in New Hope, Pennsylvania, proudly announced that Tony Award winning playwright Christopher Durang would be involved in their season even more than previously announced. While the restored regional playhouse previously announced Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike would be a part of its 2014 season, producers happily announced yesterday Christopher Durang himself would appear on stage in his latest Tony Award winning drama. Durang is now set to appear as Vanya in the production set to hit the stage this summer from July 17th until August 10th.

The show was set to play a limited engagement until June 30th only but ended up extending twice during its run and finally closed August 25th. During that time, the show recouped it’s entire investment of $2.75 million dollars. The show not only was the receipent of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play but the receipent for Best Play Award for every awards organization in New York City last season including New York Drama Critics’ Circle, the Drama Desk, the Drama League and the Outer Critics Circle. The piece is one of the most popular titles appearing in the regional theatre circuit this year throughout the entire country.
