World Premiere of 17 Orchard Point Set for Off-Broadway starring Tony Award Winner Michele Pawk
While the spring 2014 theatre season in New York is well underway, news of upcoming productions later in the spring or early summer are now beginning to make their way into the headlines! Family is something we all have stories about. We all have homes and we all have history that goes with that home. So what happens when you just leave? Does something remain your home even years after you have left it? It may be harder to return to a life you once knew if you didn’t know what was waiting for you once you arrived there. A brand new play, a world premiere in fact, talking about all of the above is head Off-Broadway later this spring. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that 17 Orchard Point will make its world premiere Off-Broadway starring Tony Award winner Michele Pawk!
17 Orchard Point is a play, written by Anton Dudley and Stephanie DiMaggio, which tells the story of home and history. A mother named Lydia returns home after a decade spent in Las Vegas to her normal and quiet home in Cleveland, Ohio. When Lydia departed years ago, she left the family’s apartment building under the management of her daughter Vera. Upon returning home, Lydia finds more than she planned for as the baggage that has accumulated over the years. With a motto like Lydia’s, “leave your baggage at the door, or it will end up on your face”, her return home is already sure to be interesting. Her daughter is fueled by faith and Lydia is delusional as the two work together only to discover a family secret that rings loud to both of them as they both seek to claim their home and history while being generations apart.
17 Orchard Point will receive its world premiere Off-Broadway later this spring. The show will play at The Beckett Theatre at Theatre Row beginning previews on April 25th, 2014. The show will officially open May 4th and run only through May 24th. This is strictly a limited engagement of four weeks only. The show will star Tony Award winner Michele Pawk (Pictured Right) as Lydia and Stephanie DiMaggio as Vera.
The world premiere will be directed by Stella Powell-Jones. The rest of the creative team includes John McDermott as scenic designer, Tilly Grimes as costume designer, Daisy Long as lighting design and Elisheba Ittoop as sound designer. The production is produced by Justin Scribner.
Michele Pawk has appeared on Broadway in Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Chicago, Seussical, Cabaret (Drama Desk & Outer Critic’s Circle Awards Nominations), Triumph of Love, Crazy for You (Drama Desk Nomination) and Hollywood Arms for which she received her Tony Award for. Stephanie DiMaggio (Pictured Left) has appeared on Broadway in A Free Man Of Color at Lincoln Center Theatre. She has also appeared Off-Broadway in Love’s Labor’s Lost and on TV in “The Good wife”.
How exciting! Luner on Theatre could not be more excited about this news for several reasons. First and foremost, we are so happy to see Tony Award winner Michele Pawk working on a brand new show Off-Broadway that we know she will be great in. From reading the description of the show alone, we know Pawk will fit right into the role of the mother and make her presence known in her time on stage.
