Encores! Off-Center Series Announces Summer 2014 Season
Summer in New York has never looked better! While New York City is the place to be when it comes to theatre, the summer months in New York are notably slower than any other of the year for the business of Broadway. When we refer to it being slow, we don’t mean sales but rather news and new productions. Summer months on Broadway are for blockbuster hits and the new shows that opened during the past season to play to the overwhelming amount of tourists flooding New York City during those months. Otherwise, there isn’t much. Last summer, New York City Center changed all of that by beginning a brand new program called Encores! Off-Center Series which highlights Off-Broadway musicals at one of New York’s top performing arts venues. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Encores! Off-Center Series will return for a second summer season in New York and has proudly announce their Summer 2014 season!
New York City Center is proud to present Encores! Off-Center Series for the second year in a row! The brand new series, which first began during Summer 2013, presents Off-Broadway musicals that pushed creative boundaries when they first premiered in New York City. City Center reproduces these works through the artists of today who see the shows not only a historical pieces but also theatrical pieces that still resonate with audiences in the theatre. Off-Center also features The Lobby Project, where artists, performers and authors, have the chance to discuss and give insight into each production and it’s legacy before the audience experiences in.
Under the artistic direction of Jeanine Tesori, New York City Center is proud to present their second season of Encores! Off-Center series filled with blockbusters. The first production of their season will be Jonathan Larson’s Tick…Tick…BOOM! Following that, the second production of the season will be Randy Newman’s Faust: The Concert! The final production of their second season will be Pump Boys and Dinettes which features music and lyrics by John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann.
Tick…Tick…BOOM! is a musical which features a book, music and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner Jonathan Larson. The show features vocal arrangements and orchestrations by Stephen Oremus and script consultation by David Auburn. The musical tells the story of an aspiring composer, Jon, who questions his life and the choices he has made on the evening before his thirtieth birthday. Larson first performed the piece as a rock monologue in 1990. The show premiered Off-Broadway in Summer 2001 at the Jane Street Theatre as a three actor piece production. The Off-Broadway premiere was directed by Scott Schwartz with choreography by Christopher Gatelli. The Cast was headlined by Raúl Esparza as Jon, Jerry Dixon as Michael and Amy Spanger as Susan. The production premiered in London in 2005 at the Menier Chocolate Factory with Neil Patrick Harris as Jon. The musical is autobiographical. Tick….Tick….BOOM! will star Lin-Manuel Miranda and Karen Olivo, two of Broadway’s biggest name stars. The production will be directed by Oliver Butler and run from June 25th to June 28th, 2014 kicking off their second season!
Faust: The Concert is a musical which features music and lyrics by Randy Newman. It tells the story of the Lord and the Devil who are childhood friends. As adults, they have a falling out which leads to the Devil being expelled from Heaven. Despite ruling his own kingdom, the Devil longs to return to his childhood home so he does where he tells the Lord that Man is bad. Arguing with him, the Lord picks out one human being in particular to exemplify that he has done no wrong. The musical premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in 1995 before it was revived at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in 1996. Faust: The Concert will be performed for a one night only special event on July 1st, 2014. The show will be directed by Thomas Kail and star Randy Newman himself as the Devil.
Pump Boys and Dinettes is a musical that is written and conceived by John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann. The musical is a tribute to the life of roadside for four gas station attendants and two waitress in a small town in North Caroline. The actors who tell the story also play the instruments themselves. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 1981 at the Chelsea West Side Arts Theatre. The musical moved to Broadway in 1982 where it went on to play 573 performances at the Princess Theatre. It was nominated for the Tony and Drama Desk Award for Best Musical. The musical was scheduled to be revived on Broadway last season but was scrapped when investors failed to raise the investment needed for the production. Pump Boys and Dinettes will be directed by Lear deBessonet and feature choreography by Danny Mefford. The show will run July 16th to July 19th, 2014.
WOW!! What an INCREDIBLE season for the Encores! Off-Center Series during only their second season up and running in New York. As New York City Center always does, they have not only brought in material people want to see but also talent on the performing and creative end people consistently love. Miranda and Olivo kicking off their season will be hard to top. I cannot even imagine missing that production. I’m also beyond thrilled to see Ms. Olivo return to New York City and theatre after stepping aside for the past few months after struggling with personal issues and working in the business. Something to also think about is Encores! past with Broadway. Is their summer production of Pump Boys And Dinettes a launching point for the failed Broadway revival of last season? It could be. Many productions of Encores! have gone on to play Broadway including After Midnight (Cotton Club Parade) currently running at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. I plan on attending as many of these production’s as I can this summer. I mean, just looking at this list, I can’t imagine summer in New York getting any hotter.
