Paper Mill Playhouse Announces 2014-2015 Season
One of our favorite regional playhouses is planning another epic season! The Paper Mill Playhouse located in Millburn, New Jersey is one of the nation’s premiere regional venues for professional theatre. Located not too far from New York City, Paper Mill Playhouse is not only known as a renown regional theatrical venue but a spot where future Broadway take a shot at the big leagues first before heading into New York. After a triumphant return after a dismal past decade, the Paper Mill Playhouse has successful returned to a top-notch theatre venue in Northern New Jersey for families and theatre goers! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news regarding the official announcement for Paper Mill Playhouse’s 2014-2015 season!
Paper Mill Playhouse was formed out of an old mill that was originally built on the land the playhouse sits on today back in 1795. The Paper Mill Playhouse did not officially begin until 1934 when the theatre officially opened for it’s first season. The playhouse proved a success and played many musicals and operetta’s until the 1950s. In 2007, the Paper Mill Playhouse found itself in serious financial trouble seeking $1.5 million dollars to continue operations or it would shutter. They failed to raise the money in time and eventually the township of Millburn bought the land on which Paper Mill Playhouse sits. They have a 75 year lease with the theatre but all of it’s operations have remained independent.
The 2014-2015 Paper Mill Playhouse season will include;
- Can-Can (October 1st – October 26th)
- Elf the Musical (November 26th – January 4th)
- Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (January 21st – February 15th)
- Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame (March 4th – April 5th)
- Ever After (May 21 – June 21)
Wow! What an exciting season for New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse! Paper Mill will kick off its season launching a brand new Broadway bound revival of Can-Can! Their season continues as they get into the holiday spirit with Buddy the Elf with Elf the Musical just in time for the holidays. Walnut Street Theatre did the same thing this past season and it proved much success for them. Great call! While we don’t see Paper Mill offer plays too often on its Mainstage, when it does, they are stellar. That is why we are not surprised by any means to see the 2013 Tony Award winning Best Play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike up in their season. As spring swoops in, Paper Mill will bring to life the East Coast premiere of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This will be produced in conjunction with La Jolla Playhouse who will produce the show in late 2014. It will be interesting to see if the production aims for a Broadway bow after this second staging. By that point in time, the earliest Disney could transfer Hunchback to Broadway would be in Fall 2015. However, I think they would wait out until Spring 2016 for the show to be considered among that season. Paper Mill will end its season with a brand new production of Ever After which will finally hit the stage after years in development.
Paper Mill Playhouse is currently in the middle of its 2013-2014 season! Currently, The Other Josh Cohen is playing and can be seen through March 16th. After Josh, the beautiful score of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific playing April 9th through May 4th. Paper Mill completes their season with the hit you just can’t help but love, Grease!, playing into the summer setting the perfect mood as the warm weather arrives. Grease will play May 28th through June 29th.
