Down Under Is Up Higher! As promised, Luner on Theatre is working to expand and bring you more coverage of theatre taking place in Australia! We brought you the exciting news when producer David Frost announced his Tony Award winning production of The King And I would return to Australia in 2014. While we were not able to at that time, we can now bring you some more details and announcements regarding the production which is set to kick off in just under two months. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the full casting and creative team for the Australian return of Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s The King And I!
The King And I is a musical that features music by Richard Rodgers with a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The musical tells the story of between the King and Anna, a british school teacher, who is hired to visit the country to teach as the king works to modernize his country. Their relationship is filled with much argument and anger as well as an underlying love that neither of them is willing to admit. The story comes from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who was the governess to King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s.
Producer David Frost has proudly announced the full cast and creative team for the upcoming Australian revival of The King and I. The leads include Lisa McCune (Pictured Right) as Anna Leonowens with Teddy Tahu Rhodes (Pictured Below Left) and Jason Scott Lee as the King of Siam. Rhodes will appear in Sudney and Brisbane while Lee will star during the Melbourne run of the production. Other leads include Shu-Cheen Yu as Lady Thiang, Adrian Li Donni as Lun Tha, Jenny Liu as Tuptim, Marty Rhone as the Kralahome and John Adam as Sir Edward Ramsey/Captain Orton.
The ensemble for will include Bianca Baykara, Novy Bereber, Will Centurion, Jade Coutts, Teresa Duddy, Vivien Emsworth, Elle Evangelista, Carolyn Ferrie, Chris Fung, Kiana Gallop-Angeles, Erin James, Emma Jarman, Patrick Jeremy, Leah Lim, Anna MaGrath, Seann Matthew Moore, Matthew Nguyen, Alexis Pedraza-Sampang, Hayannah Pickering, Marcus Rivera, Michelle Rozario, Ariya Sawadivong, Victor Siharath, Nicholas Sopelario and Yong Ying Woo.
Heading the entire production team of The King And I as director will be Christopher Renshaw. The production will also feature original Jerome Robbins choreography recreated by Susan Kikuchi. The original creative team from the 1991 revival is set to return which includes Tony Award winner Brian Thomson as scenic designer, Tony Award nominee Nigel Levings as lighting designer, Tony Award winner Roger Kirk as costume designer and Michael Waters as sound designer. Peter Case will musical direct while Neil Rutherford will serve as the associate director.
The King And I will officially begin performances April 13th, 2014 in Brisbane. The show will play there and then move to Melbourne beginning performances there June 10th followed by Sydney where performances will begin September 9th. Frost (Pictured Right) was behind the 1991 Australian mounting of The King And I which later transferred to Broadway in 1996 and went on to win the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical as well. At this point in time, the production will at least be running through September 2014 and is scheduled to make several stops.
