Upper Darby Summer Stage Announces Summer 2014 Main Stage Production

Upper Darby Summer Stage warmed the hearts of many cold summer stager’s late last night during the winter with an exciting announcement regarding it’s upcoming 2014 summer season! While rumors and excitement have been swirling over the 2014 potential productions, word has finally broke regarding the largest show of the summer and seems as people are all abuzz as Summer Stage heads off to a far magical land (No, not Brigadoon) for it’s 2014 main stage show. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Upper Darby Summer Stage will present Shrek the Musical as their 2014 main stage production!

What is Upper Darby Summer Stage?

Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful youth theatre programs. Created by Harry Dietzler in 1976, the program is home to over 700 youth and 100 staff members every summer coming together to create true magic on stage for all ages in the Philadelphia region. Upper Darby Summer Stage is located in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center. The program boosts several notable alumni such as Emmy Award winner Tina FeyTerrance J. Nolen (One of the Arden Theatre Company’s Founders), Monica Horan (Everybody Loves Raymond), Alyse Alan Louis (Mamma Mia!), Josh Young (Jesus Christ Superstar) and the well-known songwriting team Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk.

Shrek-the-MusicalUpper Darby Summer Stage proudly announced late last night that Shrek the Musical would fill the slot for the 2014 main stage production! While Upper Darby Summer Stage is best known for it’s six children theatre shows it puts on each summer, the program also boosts an excellent main stage program which is usually a well known Broadway musical. In 2013, Upper Darby Summer Stage presented Fiddler on the Roof. At this point in time, no official dates have been announced for the production. Also at this point in time, no official creative team members have been announced for the show.

The Upper Darby Summer Stage main stage program is open to adults ages 18 through 28. Auditions are usually held in early June with callbacks that follow. The production is then cast and rehearses on weeknights through June and July leading up to the production’s show dates in the last weekend of July and/or first weekend of August. The production is reviewed by several critics and consistently ranks along the lines of professional productions seen in downtown Philadelphia professional theatres. Recent main stage productions have included Hairspray, Titanic: The Musical, West Side Story, Thoroughly Modern Millie, My Favorite Year, Ragtime and Beauty and the Beast.
