Walnut Street Theater Announces 2014-2015 Season
America’s oldest theatre is setting plans for another blockbuster season! The Walnut Street Theater located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the nation’s oldest theatre and the state theatre of Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of Philadelphia, the Walnut has stood as the original Philadelphia theatre venue as an expansion of theatres, centers for the arts and entertainment hubs have emerged in the city over the past few decades. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news of Walnut Street Theatre’s 2014-2015 season!
The Walnut Street Theatre was built and opened in 1809. It is the oldest operating theatre in the English-speaking world and oldest theatre in America. The first production held in the theatre was The Rivals in 1812. From 1941 to 1969, the theatre was owned by The Shubert Organization and held many pre Broadway runs for shows that would soon be very well-known as A Streetcar Named Desire, The Diary of Anne Frank, A Man For All Seasons and A Raisin in the Sun just to name a few. The Walnut Street Theatre Company took over in 1983 to serve as a regional not for profit producing company and has been in place their ever since. The 2013-2014 season for Walnut Street marks the theater’s 205th season and 31st as a not for profit.
The 2014-2015 Walnut Street Theatre season will include;
- 9 to 5 the Musical (September 2nd – October 19th)
- Mary Poppins (November 4th – January 4th)
- Private Lives (January 13th – March 1st)
- And Then There Were None (March 10th – April 26th)
- Memphis (May 12th – July 12th)
Wow! What an incredible season for the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. While Walnut Street is, arguably, the most well-known theatre in Philadelphia and always pick large titles to fill its stage, this upcoming season is bringing that hype to a new level. The three musicals scheduled for next season are three major productions that will bring in audiences throughout the entire season.
Currently, the Walnut Street Theatre is in the midst of its 2013-2014 season and just about halfway through it! They are celebrating their 205th anniversary. Currently, Other Desert Cities can be found playing through March 2nd, 2014. The final two shows of the season will include Arsenic and Old Lace playing from March 11th to April 27th and How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying closing their season as it plays from May 13th until July 13th.
