Daniel Radcliffe will return to Broadway in The Cripple of Inishmaan
How do you live an extraordinary life when you’re an ordinary person? Many of us have found ourselves longing for something before. The desire to want something is an experience every human has had when an opportunity not far from our lives presents itself in plain sight. However, if we are held back by the world we know, how do we move forward? All of this and more is brought to life in a brand new play titled The Cripple of Inishmaan which won over audiences in London last summer. While british theatre goers had their chance to learn how to live an extraordinary life, it now is time to teach the Americans as this new play heads across the pond to the Great White Way later this season. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Daniel Radcliffe will return to Broadway in The Cripple of Inishmaan!
The Cripple of Inishmaan is a comedy by Martin McDonagh that takes place on a remote island of the west coast of Ireland known as Inishmaan. In another neighboring island of Inishmore, Hollywood film crews have arrived to begin making a movie there and Cripple Billy from Inishmaan wants to be in the film more than anyone. However, Cripple Billy must fight to break from the harsh reality of his ordinary life in order to live an extraordinary one when extraordinary circumstances present themselves.
Producers have happily announced that following a sold out engagement in London last summer, The Cripple of Inishmaan starring Daniel Radcliffe will transfer to Broadway this season. The production is set to begin previews April 12th, 2014 and officially open on April 20th at The Cort Theatre. The production will play a strictly limited engagement through July 20th, 2014. The Cripple of Inishmaan previously played London’s Noel Coward Theatre as well as The Public Theatre in 1998 and a recent Off-Broadway engagement in New York City in 2008 with the Atlantic Theatre Company.
Leading the entire production is the well-known Daniel Radcliffe, best known for his portrayal of Harry Potter on the screens and last seen on Broadway in How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, who will repeat his performance as Billy. Radcliffe will reunite with his entire original West End cast for the production which includes Ingrid Craigie as Kate Osborne,Pádraic Delaney as Babbybobby, Sarah Greene as Helen McCormick, Gillian Hanna as Eileen Osborne, Gary Lilburn as Doctor, Conor MacNeill as Bartley McCormick, Pat Shortt as Johnnypateenmike and June Watson as Mammy.
Leading the entire production is Michael Grandage who is director. The rest of the production team includes Tony Award winner Christopher Oram as scenic and costume designer, Paule Constable as lighting design and Alex Baranowski as sound designer and composer. The production is produced by Michael Grandage Company, Arielle Tepper Madover, L.T.D. Productions, Martin McCallum, Stephanie P. McClelland, Stacey Mindich, Starry Night Entertainment and The Shubert Organization.
I am very excited to see that Daniel Radcliffe will be making his way back to Broadway this season! While Radcliffe has appeared on Broadway only a handful of times, he is an actor has consistently proved himself off-screen both in the West End and here on Broadway. He has appeared in Equus and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, two totally different productions and roles, and has left audiences won over by his talent. While Radcliffe will always be the boy who lived to so many fans, I think he is a remarkable young actor who does not rely on his name alone to sell tickets. His name will sell tickets but his talent will bring you back time after time.
Producers were very happy to also announce that along with this production that over 10,000 tickets will be sold at the price of $27 in order to allow as many people as possible to experience this show on Broadway.
