Jersey Boys Becomes The 14th Longest-Running Show In Broadway History
Big Man In Town! The Jersey Boys may have the word Jersey in their name but they are the kings of Manhattan. The hit musical continues to break records entering it’s eighth year on Broadway surpassing production after production on a long and note worth list of long running productions in Broadway history. While shows come and go so often now a days, the soundtrack of this iconic band seems to be one audiences can’t take off the record player as the musical continues to gain success not only on Broadway but worldwide as well. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that Jersey Boys is now the 14th longest running show in Broadway history!
Jersey Boys is a musical that features music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe, and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. According to a press release, Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, about a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks who became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide — all before they were thirty.” The show features “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Oh What a Night,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Working My Way Back To You.”
As of last night, Jersey Boys will play it’s 3,389th performance surpassing Grease to become the 14th longest running show in Broadway history. This is the original Broadway production of Grease Jersey Boys surpasses which began on Broadway in 1972 at The Broadhurst Theatre and eventually moved to The Royale Theatre running all the way until 1980.
Jersey Boys premiered back on Broadway in 2005 at The August Wilson Theater on 52nd Street. The show, to this day, still continue to play at that theater. The musical was nominated for 8 Tony Awards during it’s premiere on Broadway and went on to win four of those including Best Musical. The original Broadway recording of Jersey Boys also received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2006. The musical has grown into a world-wide phenomena with productions not only in New York but also in Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto, London, Melbourne and cities across the United States with two U.S. national tours. The show is next set to premiere in South Africa. As of July 2013, 18 million people have experienced Jersey Boys worldwide.
