Casting Announced for London Premiere of Urinetown the Musical
While the world may never know if Urinetown is an actual place or not, for the time being, let’s assume it is London. Now why would we say that? We only say that because Urinetown the Musical is set to make its United Kingdom premiere in London is just over one month. With rehearsals now official underway, Luner on Theatre is excited to hop back across the pond today as we bring you some news from the West End theatre scene just in time for the upcoming winter/spring season! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the official cast list for the London debut of Urinetown the Musical!
Urinetown is a musical which features music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis. The musical is set in a city somewhere in the future that is dealing with a terrible drought. To cope with the conditions of less water, Caldwell B. Cladwell has made a fortune off of monopolizing public toilets. Yes, that’s right, If you want to pee, you have to pay. With brutal police keeping the law and order of the town, if you’re caught breaking the law, you are sent off to an infamous place known as Urinetown. No one knows what it is or where it is, but they do know no one ever comes back from it. With the city in need a revolution and a hero, Urinetown plays on the monopolizing business world we have grown to become and takes a dramatic stance to prove just how bad things may get.
Urinetown the Musical is set to make its premiere in London in February 2014. The show is set to begin previews on February 22nd, 2014 and will officially open on March 11th at the St. James Theatre. Yesterday was the very first day of rehearsals for Urinetown the Musical in London! The company and creative team got the chance to mingle, chat and see presentations of the various design aspects that are going to be incorporated into this production. If only Luner on Theatre had the chance to fly out to London to experience the British premiere of Urinetown! This musical is one of our favorite pieces of theatre and comes back to the stage in a professional spotlight for the first time since it’s Broadway debut in the 2001-2002 season. The musical finds itself ever-present at a time more interesting than when it first came to life over a decade ago. Since then, the world has been rocked by Occupy Movements, the Arab Spring and many more sweeping political ordeals that have left us all looking at the world thinking “Is this Urinetown?” As the price of living worldwide continues to skyrocket, Urinetown comes to life on the stage in London in a time when the world has never been more like this made up place. Urinetown is here.
