Wicked Becomes 11th Longest-Running Show In Broadway History
No Mourns The Wicked! And why should they when they have such news to celebrate! While the 10th anniversary of Wicked on Broadway approaches within the next 2 months, the witches of Oz already have plenty to celebrate as their show makes history once again tonight. While many shows come and go on Broadway, there are many productions that have hit the spot on Broadway. Whether its connecting to the audiences every day lives or taking them away to a magical place, the magic of Broadway is truly evident in shows that run for months, years and sometimes even decades. History will be made once again in Oz tonight. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the exciting news that as of tonight, Wicked will become the 11th longest running show in Broadway history!
Wicked is a musical which features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The musical is based on of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The musical tells the story from the witches perspective before Dorothy ever arrives and how their lives only become more complex after she does. The musical references the book and famous 1939 film. The musical tells the story of Glinda and Elphaba, two unlikely friends, who struggle through their opposite personalities, rivalry over the same love interest and reaction to the Wizard’s corrupt government. The musical tells their story all the way through the end of Elphaba’s public fall from grace.
After tonight’s evening performance (September 4th, 2013) of Wicked, the show will move up the list of longest running Broadway shows to place as number 11 after playing its 4,093rd performance. The show will surpass Miss Saigon which ran on Broadway for 4,092 performances at The Broadway Theatre. Wicked surpassing Miss Saigon is a huge landmark representing just how well the modern musical has done in its time to pass a blockbuster hit like Miss Saigon which has dominated the stage on Broadway, in the West End and around the world as well.
Wicked officially opened on Broadway October 30th, 2003 after an extensive out-of-town run in San Francisco in the summer of 2003. The show opened at The Gershwin Theatre in 2003 and continues to play in that space to this day. The production was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 2003 including Best Musical. The musical received the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Since 2003, Wicked has received 32 awards out of 63 nominations for the production. All other productions of Wicked have also gone on to be nominated for dozens of awards as well.
While the production began on Broadway in 2003, many productions have opened worldwide since then. There are currently 9 productions of Wicked running around the world. Those productions can be found in New York, London (Pictured Right), Japan in Tokyo, Australia/New Zealand in Auckland, South Korea in Seoul, Latin America in Mexico City, a brand new U.K. tour and two concurrent North American national tours. The first spanish speaking production of Wicked in Mexico City officially opens in October and the U.K. tour is the first ever of its kind for the show in England.
