Upper Darby Summer Stage Presents Fiddler on the Roof
A different type of magic! Upper Darby Summer Stage may be best known for its award winning children’s theatre program featuring six productions every summer. However, one of the best kept secrets in the Philadelphia region is the Mainstage production at Upper Darby Summer Stage each summer. Young performers working with theatre professionals to bring to life some of the greatest productions ever written for the theatre. This year, Upper Darby Summer Stage is bringing to life a classic musical in a new staging. Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the coverage of Fiddler on the Roof this weekend and next weekend at Upper Darby Summer Stage!
Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful youth theatre programs. Created by Harry Dietzler in 1976, the program is home to over 700 youth and 100 staff members every summer coming together to create true magic on stage for all ages in the Philadelphia region. Upper Darby Summer Stage is located in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center. The program boosts several notable alumni such as Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, Terrance J. Nolen (One of the Arden Theatre Company’s Founders), Monica Horan (Everybody Loves Raymond), Alyse Alan Louis (Mamma Mia!), Josh Young (Jesus Christ Superstar) and the well-known songwriting team Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk.
Fiddler on the Roof is a classic musical that tells the story of Tevye, a father, who tries to hold his family together as the battle between tradition and a modern world wage right before his own eyes. Set in Anatevka, Russia in 1906, the story of the small jewish village has captured the hearts of audiences since it’s debut on Broadway in the 1960’s. Winning 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Fiddler on the Roof is a story of family, struggle, passion and love that many still deal with in today’s society. The musical features music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein.
Fiddler on the Roof runs around 2 hours and 50 minutes (With Intermission)
Fiddler on the Roof is directed by Marcus and Rachel Stevens and features choreography by Abby Shunskis. Kevin Dietzler serves as co-choreographer. The show features musical direction by Gina Giachero. Allie Steele is Stage Manager. The show will also features a scenic design by Lindsey Mayer, costume design by Amy Best, a lighting design by Shelley Hicklin, prop design by Patrick Ahearn and a sound design by Toby Pettit. Chris Luner and Staci Sorrell are assistant stage manager. All shows are under the technical direction of Cat Johnson with Paul Moffitt as production manager. The Mainstage program at Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of a professional caliber. The show is filled with performers age 16 to 28 who are high school students, college students and young adults. Many of them have attended school to study the arts and many have not. What makes the Upper Darby Summer Stage mainstage production so spectacular is it’s production value. Young adults working with theatre professionals to create a production that could revival many shows one could see in Philadelphia.Recent Mainstage productions include Hairspray (2012), Titanic the Musical (2011), West Side Story (2010), Thoroughly Modern Millie (2009), My Favorite Year (2008) and Ragtime the Musical (2007).
