Upper Darby Summer Stage Presents Disney’s The Little Mermaid
The Magic Heads Under The Sea! Luner on Theatre is bringing you coverage of Upper Darby Summer Stage all summer long! From our weekly coverage of shows to our brand new series Week In Magic, we’re happy to be bringing the magic that much closer to you when we can! This week, the magic steps it up as a Disney classic makes its debut at Summer Stage for a fantastic new adventure! Today, Luner on Theatre brings you the coverage of Disney’s The Little Mermaid this week at Upper Darby Summer Stage!
Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful youth theatre programs. Created by Harry Dietzler in 1976, the program is home to over 700 youth and 100 staff members every summer coming together to create true magic on stage for all ages in the Philadelphia region. Upper Darby Summer Stage is located in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center. The program boosts several notable alumni such as Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, Terrance J. Nolen (One of the Arden Theatre Company’s Founders), Monica Horan (Everybody Loves Raymond), Alyse Alan Louis (Mamma Mia!), Josh Young (Jesus Christ Superstar) and the well-known songwriting team Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk.
The third show of the 2013 Summer Stage season is Disney’s The Little Mermaid! The Little Mermaid is a classic tale first brought to life by Disney in the hit animated movie. It tells the story of a mermaid named Ariel who enjoys just about everything besides being a mermaid. Ariel finds conflict while wanting to explore and experience the human world yet stay true to her friends and family under the sea. She is better able to experience her dreams with the help of the evil witch Ursala and in the end discovers what is most important to her. Flounder and Sebestian are there the entire way to help her through an unforgettable journey filled with song and dance.
All children’s theatre productions run 70 minutes in length!
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is directed and co-choreographed by Dawn Morningstar. The show is also co-choreographed by Devon Fields. The show features musical direction by Daniel Matarazzo. Katie Ringwood is Stage Manager. The show will also features a scenic design by Elizabeth Bracken, costume design by Julia Poiesz , a lighting design by J. Dominic Chacon, prop design by Annie Heath and Shannon Powlick and a sound design by Toby Pettit. The show also features puppets which are designed by Patrick Ahearn. All shows are under the technical direction of Cat Johnson with Paul Moffitt as production manager. Disney’s The Little Mermaid marks the middle point of the season for the six children’s theatre productions featured this year at Upper Darby Summer Stage! The rest of the children’s theatre season includes Freckleface Strawberry, A Year With Frog & Toad TYA and Willy Wonka Jr.! The mainstage production, a full-scale Broadway musical performed by youth ages 16-28, this season is Fiddler on the Roof!
