Upper Darby Summer Stage is one of the nation’s oldest and most successful youth theatre programs. Created by Harry Dietzler in 1976, the program is home to over 700 youth and 100 staff members every summer coming together to create true magic on stage for all ages in the Philadelphia region. Upper Darby Summer Stage is located in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center. The program boosts several notable alumni such as Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, Terrance J. Nolen (One of the Arden Theatre Company’s Founders), Monica Horan (Everybody Loves Raymond), Alyse Alan Louis (Mamma Mia!), Josh Young (Jesus Christ Superstar) and the well known songwriting team Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk.
The second show of the 2013 Upper Darby Summer Stage season is Disney’s My Son Pinocchio! Disney’s My Son Pinocchio is the classic story of Pinocchio told from a new perspective; Geppetto’s. Geppetto takes us through his adventures with Pinocchio from him coming to life to running away to pleasure island to the deep blue sea. The show mixes many of the classic elements of Pinocchio into this new telling of the story. Geppetto visits a magical land called Idealia where all children are made to be perfect. The show brings to life many lessons for both children and adults from how to act as a kid to what it truly means to be a parent. Many familiar elements such as the blue fairy and the hit songs “I’ve Got No Strings” and “When You Wish Upon A Star” still manage to make an appearance in this production. Disney’s My Son Pinocchio features a score by Pippin & Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz.
