Broadway’s biggest night is just around the corner. The 2013 Tony Awards, hands down the biggest night for American Theatre, will be held this Sunday June 9th beginning at 8 PM. The awards ceremony returns this year to the iconic and historic Radio City Music Hall this year after a two year stint uptown at The Beacon Theatre. For those watching on television, the ceremony will begin at 8 PM EST on CBS. This year’s ceremony is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. This marks the fourth time Harris will host the awards ceremony. Neil Patrick Harris always manages to put together quite a night of entertainment from the opening number to the 11 oh clock number, which in this case, closes the show.
Each year, The Tony Awards are filled with performances from the newest shows on Broadway and several productions that are still playing Broadway from year’s past. The new productions, especially the nominated, get a chance to show their stuff not only to the rest of Broadway but to a nation which may soon be experiencing them soon as national tours set future dates. The new productions that will get a chance to perform on the Tony Awards this year are A Christmas Story, The Musical; Annie; Bring It On: The Musical; Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella; Kinky Boots; Matilda The Musical; Motown The Musical; and Pippin. The only nominated production that will not perform is The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
This year, more then ever in past years, will also feature a large portion of past that are still currently running Broadway shows to the awards ceremony as well. The currently running Broadway productions set to perform on this year’s Tony Awards are Chicago; Jersey Boys; Newsies; Once; Mamma Mia!; Rock of Ages; Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark; The Lion King; and The Phantom of the Opera. Luner on Theatre did receive word at one point in time Neil Patrick Harris has mentioned wanting to include “All of Broadway” this year in the ceremony. How so exactly? Only time will tell.
