A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder Will Guide Its Way to Broadway

gents250x200Fall-ing into place already? The 2013 spring Broadway theatre season hasn’t even come to an end yet and we are already beginning to line up shows for the Fall. The first production we are covering coming to Broadway this fall will make it’s way to New York City after two critically acclaimed runs out of town already behind it. Today, producers have announced that the new musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder will make it’s way to Broadway in Fall 2013.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is a musical which features  a book by Robert L. Freedman with music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak. The musical is set in England’s elegant Edwardian era where Monty Navarro, the black sheep of the D’Ysquith family, has just discovered he is ninth in line to inherit a dukedom. So what exactly should he do to make sure he obtains it? He decides to eliminate all eight other heirs standing in his way. However, all eight of them are played by the same person. This fun new musical goes to extreme lengths to show just how low we go to make sure they get to the top. The musical is based off of the novel “Israel Rank” by Roy Horniman.

The show will find it’s home at The Walter Kerr Theatre where it will begin previews on October 22nd, 2013. The show will officially open on November 17th, 2013. A Gentlman’s Guide has already played two critically acclaimed runs with one at The Hartford Stage and one at The Old Globe Theatre just this past season.

gentguide5No official casting has been announced yet except for one definite cast member. Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays (Pictured Left) will repeat his work playing all eight heirs to the throne in the Broadway bound production. He previously played the part in both the Hartford Stage and Old Globe Theatre production of the show. It has not been confirmed nor denied if any other previous cast members from the Hartford Stage or Old Globe run will transfer to Broadway with the production as well. Luner on Theatre will be sure to keep you updated on casting once an official announcement has been made.

There are so many things that excite me about this new musical coming to Broadway. For one, it’s a brand new musical. Also, there is something in the style of this production and summary of it that makes me think of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. However, I don’t want to make it sound like I’m washing up this production to be another version of that. This show sounds significantly particular which excites me. It’s so new and so fresh. Also, the idea of Mays playing the role of all eight heirs to the throne already has me filled with excitement  I can only imagine what a spectacular addition this show will be to Broadway when it arrives next fall.

It still may be half a season away but A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is officially coming to Broadway! This announcement did not come as a surprise to those who saw either of the previous two runs of this show. Luner on Theatre not only looks forward to it’s arrival but bringing you coverage on it up until them.
