Idina Menzel Will Return to Broadway in Original New Musical
An epic award winning team and a Broadway legend return for an exciting new project still an entire year away. Even though the spring 2013 theatre season is really just about to get underway, Broadway is wasting no time already looking ahead to next year. Original new musicals are expected to appear more next season and after this announcement, there is no reason not to already be looking ahead to this new productions. In a bombshell announcement, producers have announced that Broadway star Idina Menzel will return to Broadway to star in a new original musical, If/Then, written by the creators of Next to Normal.
If/Then is a new original musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, the Tony Award winning and Pulizter Prize winning team of Next to Normal. The new musical is being billed in the following manner; “On the verge of turning 40, Elizabeth moves to New York City, the ultimate city of possibility, intent on a fresh start – new home, new friends, and hopes for a resurgent career. But even in her carefully planned new life, the smallest decision or most random occurrence will impact her world in ways she never dreamt possible. Set against the ever-shifting landscape of modern day Manhattan, If/Then is a romantic and original new musical about how choice and chance collide and how we learn to love the fallout.”
If/Then is currently scheduled to make it’s world premiere in Washington D.C. at the National Theatre. This run will count as the out-of-town Broadway run with previews beginning November 5th, 2013 and an official opening on November 24th, 2014. The musical will then transfer to Broadway in the spring beginning previews on March 7th, 2014 and officially open on March 27th, 2014. No official theatre has been announced but we do know the production will open at a Nederlander house.
Next to Normal and RENT director Michael Greif is on board to direct the production which is being Shepherded and produced by David Stone who has produced Next to Normal and Wicked.
No official casting has been announced yet for the production besides that Idina Menzel will star. Menzel, a Broadway favorite, is returning to Broadway for the first time since her Tony Award winning role in Wicked as Elphaba. She is also know from her appearance in the original cast of RENT on Broadway. Manzel seems very excited to return to Broadway in a new original musical. When asked she said;
“I’ve experienced the beauty of working on original musicals and was eager to find a project where the material was exciting and new and spoke to my heart. I’m thrilled to have finally found it – an original musical with a complex, flawed, and surprising central character that I cannot wait to bring to life onstage. I have loved collaborating with Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey on the creation of this character. And it is such a blessing to be reunited with Michael Greif, who launched my career with Rent, and David Stone, who took such good care of me with Wicked. I am extremely excited about If/Then and very much look forward to returning home to Broadway.”
As our her fans! The announcement, which came yesterday, exploded with people cheering for Menzel’s return to Broadway since Wicked just under a decade ago. Another exciting factor in this announcement is the one of a new work by the team who brought us Next to Normal on Broadway.It is interesting that the announcement would come a full year in advance but we are definitely not surprised. The hype that will now build up for this production leading up to the world premiere and Broadway premiere is one that will work to the advantage of all involved with this show.
