Jersey Boys hits 3,000 Broadway Performances
Oh What a Night! The life of a Broadway show always seems to be a hit or a miss with something audiences can’t seem to get enough of or can’t seem to digest. Now in it’s seventh year on Broadway, I think it’s safe to say audiences love the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in the musical Jersey Boys. Tonight, the Tony Award winning Jersey Boys will make history once again as it hits a record 3,000 performances on Broadway tonight!
Jersey Boys is a musical that features music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe, and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. According to a press release, Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, about a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks who became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide — all before they were thirty.” The show features “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Oh What a Night,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Working My Way Back To You.”
Jersey Boys premiered back on Broadway in 2005 at The August Wilson Theater on 52nd Street. The show, to this day, still continue to play at that theater. The musical was nominated for 8 Tony Awards during it’s premiere on Broadway and went on to win four of those including Best Musical. John Lloyd Young, currently featured in Jersey Boys and pictured below, won a Tony Award for his performance as well. The original Broadway recording of Jersey Boys also received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2006. The musical has grown into a world wide phenomena with productions not only in New York but also in Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto, London, Melbourne and cities across the United States with two U.S. national tours. The show is next set to premiere in South Africa.
The current Broadway cast of Jersey Boys includes Matt Bogart (Nick Massi), Drew Gehling (Bob Gaudio), Jeremy Kushnier (Tommy DeVito) and John Lloyd Young (Frankie Valli) as The Four Seasons with Peter Gregus and Mark Lotito. The rest of the cast also includes Miles Aubrey, Erik Bates, Candi Boyd, Jared Bradshaw, Cara Cooper, Ken Dow, Russell Fischer, Rashad Naylor, Katie O’Toole, Joe Payne, Jessica Rush, Dominic Scaglione Jr., Nathan Scherich, Sara Schmidt and Taylor Sternberg.
Shout out to Katie O’Toole who is a alumni of the Wagner College Theatre program! I know Wagner College Theatre is proud of all it’s alumni but especially those who continue to amaze the program with their success on Broadway.
Jersey Boys is also currently Broadway’s 18th longest running musical! And it’s still going!
