Wagner College Theatre Earns Top Ratings for Best College Theatre

The 2012-2013 school year may have already started for Wagner College this semester but the nationally accredited Wagner College Theatre department already has some new bragging rights. Or several at that. For the ninth year in a row, the college’s theatre department has placed on the Top 20 List of Best College Theatre. And while last year the program ranked fifth in the nation, the department and college was happy to learn the theatre department not only moved up in the rankings but is now fourth on the list.

Wagner College Theatre is a nationally credited theatre program located at Wagner College, the Staten Island liberal arts school. The program, which has been around since the 1960′s, has grown over time to become one of the top theatre programs in the country placing as #1 in 2004 and 2005. To this day, the program still remains within the top five list. The program has produced tons of successful alumni that go out to work in the real world not only in theatre but numerous other positions. Last season, the department presented Jesus Christ Superstar, My Fair Lady, Urinetown the Musical and the world premiere of Goddess Wheel as well Catholic School Girls, Lysistrata, The Dance Project and Tennessee William’s One Acts.

When it comes to the official rankings and placement on the final list, a variety of factors play into it all. Facilities, staff, productions, courses taught and alumni success are just a few of said factors. Wagner College Theatre was very fortunate to pull off their 2011-2012 season after being displaced by a renovation taking place at the historic Main Hall at Wagner College. Many of the items being fixed included, new windows, a new roof, fixing mortar decay and restoring the buildings historic original elements. The theatre in Main Hall was also lucky enough to receive a little love during the renovation process. However, the details of that (including pictures!) will be released later this week so stay tuned for that.

For the 2012-2013 season, Wagner College Theatre has managed to top itself from last year once again. On the Main Stage this year, the season will open with the Sondheim review Putting It Together followed by the blockbuster Broadway musical Legally Blonde. The second semester on the Main Stage featurings Jonathan Larson’s epic musical masterpiece, RENT followed by the all time classic musical, Guys & Dolls. The black box Stage One productions include Springs Awakening, The School For Lies, Five Women Wearing the Same Dress and The Dance Project.

Wagner College Theatre is also happy to recognize their 8 current alumni on Broadway in various shows. The department has proved itself time after time with success alumni performing on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in National Tours and regional venues around the nation. Some of Wagner College Theatre’s alumni include,

  • Christina DeCicco (Class of 2002) who currently stars in Evita on Broadway as the Eva for Wednesday evening and Saturday matinee performances. She almost most recently could have been seen in Sister Act.
